Chicago office is looking for a Field Engineer (Transit) to join our Team! We are a leading engineering firm known for quality, responsiveness, and a proven track record of success as a civil engineering firm.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Field Engineer to join our growing team on a major rail transit construction project.

This role will work closely with the Field Operations Manager.

The Field Engineer - Transit you will support day-to-day construction oversight in the field, assist with documentation, coordination, and quality assurance, and play a key role in delivering complex infrastructure safely and efficiently.

  • Monitor and document contractor work and existing infrastructure status to ensure compliance with contract documents.
  • Verify work is being installed meeting Quality Requirements of Specifications, Plans, and Standards.
  • Attend the required training and maintain current training as required.
  • Identify problems in the field in advance and report them to the supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Recommend solutions to design, construction, and project related problems.
  • Track daily progress, maintain field logs, take progress photos, and submit Daily Inspection Reports via email or Trimble as required.
  • Verify that the contractor is performing the required testing and inspection of the work and materials being placed.
  • Assist with project administration.
  • Prioritize safety procedures and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Review shop drawings and schedules for constructability.
  • Be familiar with project RFIs, Submittals, and other relevant documents.
  • Track work on Time & Material basis (T&M) if required.
  • Support coordination of third-party utility work, flagging, and shutdown activities.
  • Able to work in a collaborative and mission-driven team environment with growth opportunities.
  • Participate in field meetings, site walks, and assist in coordinating with stakeholders and internal teams.
  • Help maintain records for potential change orders, claims, and as-built documentation.
  • Work on-site or at the project field office.

    On-site work might include night and weekend work as required for short or extended periods of time.

  • Must have 3-5 years of experience in construction including transit, support of excavation, utilities, roadway, highway and/or bridge construction experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, and submittals is required.
  • Transit or infrastructure project experience is preferred.
  • A Valid Drivers’ License is required.
  • A personal vehicle to travel to the project different site locations may be required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams); and basic knowledge of project management or field reporting software [ (formerly e-Builder), Share Point, and Bluebeam] is required.
  • Erosion Control Certification and/or OSHA-30 a plus.

    Working Conditions
  • IEI will provide a company vehicle for fieldwork with acceptable driver's record.
  • Must be physically capable of walking and moving about on the construction sites, have good hand-eye coordination, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.

  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or in-progress construction hazards: fumes, toxic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration.

    Often works around dust, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Sometimes needs to put in extra hours, including weekends, to keep up with intense construction work at times and deal with unexpected situations and accidents.
  • Spends some time working indoors to review blueprints and write reports.
  • Usually works a standard 40-hour workweek either daytime or nighttime.
  • Usually works in outside weather conditions.
