Job Description:

The Classroom Assistant in the School of Business and Technology is responsible for supporting instructional activities in campus laboratory settings under the direction of the course instructor.

Key responsibilities include assisting individual students and groups in the practice and application of textile skills, demonstrating techniques, providing support to address learning needs, and consulting with the instructor regarding student progress or areas requiring additional attention.

Responsibilities
  • Assist faculty in reinforcing knit technology instruction through hands-on demonstrations.
  • Prepare and create swatch materials for classroom use, support students during open lab sessions, and assist in the development and execution of student project work.
  • Guide students in using various knitting machines and hand-knitting techniques.
  • Facilitate problem-solving and experimentation with ideas, offering industry-informed insights and guidance.
  • Work independently with students during open lab hours.
  • Coordinate with IT to update knitting software and related computer systems as needed.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair knitting machines; including Dubied, Stoll, and Brother models, as well as linkers and other departmental equipment.
  • Manage scheduling of demonstrations and coordinate supplies with department and other classroom assistants.
  • Train newly hired faculty and staff on the proper use of departmental knitting equipment.
  • Provide specialized demonstrations for faculty, course development, and lead demonstrations for the college upon request.
  • Actively supporting students during classes and open lab sessions, including guiding their use of knitting equipment.
  • Assisting faculty, preparing instructional materials, and creating knit swatches and demonstrations as requested by the department.
  • Participate and offer recommendations in team and department meetings.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Textile Science, Textile Technology, or a related field.
  • 2 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of knit fabric analysis and production planning.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Textile Science, Textile Technology, or a related field preferred.

  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience preferred.
  • Prior experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software for knit textiles preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Demonstrated expertise in textile development and related skills.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, self-motivation, and problem solving skills.
  • Skilled in support of special art and technology hardware, software and peripherals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with both faculty and student populations.
  • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software for knit textiles.

  • Ability to assist students with knitting machines during scheduled classes and open lab hours.

  • Demonstrable expertise in set-up, maintenance, and repair of Dubied, Stoll, Santoni, and Brothers machines and technology.

  • Ability to work effectively as both a leader and a contributing team member, collaborating with colleagues across departments on diverse initiatives.
  • Skilled in active listening and customer service, with the ability to understand and respond positively to the needs of students, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability and high performance.


Additional Information:

Please note all offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of the background check process.

Salary

Salary: $70,391.75 per year

The UCE-FIT Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) dictates the compensation, benefits, and conditions of employment.

Hiring Salary: $70,391.75 per year with step increments per Salary Schedule 85, after one year of service and annually thereafter.

Work Schedule

Days/Hours: M-F, 30 hours per week, in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.

The working conditions for this position may be in any combination of an office space, classroom, or lab.

The physical requirement for this position will require frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent bending or twisting, frequent walking, frequent climbing, frequent pushing, pulling, or reaching, frequent use of hands to handle tools, frequent lifting of 20 lbs.
