The Development Program provides in excess of $50 million in private support annually toward the mission of The Rockefeller University, which is to improve the understanding of life for the benefit of humanity.
Working with the Board of Trustees and volunteer groups, including The Rockefeller University Council, the Committee on Trust and Estate Plans, and the Women and Science and Parents and Science Initiatives, the Development Office oversees all private fund-raising at the University, including annual, capital, and endowment campaigns.
Overview
  
The Grants Manager and Writer will play a vital role in the solicitation and stewardship of philanthropic support as a member of our highly collaborative 30-member Development Office.
  
Reporting to the Senior Director of Development Communications and Grants Management, this individual will be part of a five-person Foundation Relations team and also work closely with the Major Gifts team.
  
The Grants Manager and Writer will handle multiple aspects of project management related to institutional and investigator-initiated grants from foundations, as well as major gifts from individuals.
This may involve preparing proposals, budgets, and reports; assisting in the creation and design of informational content for printed publications and the Web; working with faculty members; and interacting with other university departments such as Finance, Sponsored Programs, Technology Transfer, the General Counsel, Academic Affairs, the Dean’s Office, Public Affairs, and others.
  
The ideal candidate will have a facility with language and numbers, the ability to work on a wide range of projects simultaneously, an interest in science, and previous experience in an academic setting or biomedical research center.
  
Responsibilities
  
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  
+ This individual will act as primary manager for grant initiatives at pre-award and post-award stages.
Responsibilities will include identifying grant opportunities; staying generally informed about the research under way in Rockefeller’s laboratories; assuring that grant program guidelines are met; drafting and editing budgets; and fulfilling reporting requirements.
+ In addition to institutional gifts and grants secured by the Development Office, this individual will administer foundation grants awarded to individual investigators on a competitive basis.
The Grants Manager and Writer will announce the availability of these awards, specify application requirements, work with the university administration to select applicants for limited submission programs, and assist investigators in completing and submitting their applications and progress reports.
  
+ Additional related responsibilities on institutional and investigator-initiated awards will include: developing and refining project budgets; developing familiarity with internal and external administrative systems; ensuring that submissions are made on schedule; monitoring allocation of research funding; reconciling financial records; assisting in fulfillment of compliance requirements; and ensuring up-to-date record keeping.
  
Other responsibilities may include:
  
+ Helping to conceptualize, write, and design diverse materials to raise funds and tell compelling scientific stories to a sophisticated lay audience, including benefactors and prospective donors.
In addition to proposals and donor reports, such projects may include brochures, invitations, videos, and websites, as well as slides and remarks for presentations.
Additionally, this individual may contribute to the development of science-focused concept papers that describe new funding opportunities across the university.
+ Supporting grant review committees, working groups, and team meetings, in collaboration with Development Office colleagues, faculty, and university administrators.
+ Helping to plan and coordinate site visits and donor meetings, including strategy and content development, working with Development Office colleagues, laboratories, and other university departments.
+ Providing editorial support to other Development Office teams working on programs and events, including the university’s annual fundraisers (Women & Science and Celebrating Science), the annual convocation, lectures, symposia, and other special events.
  
Qualifications
  
**REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
  
+ Bachelor’s degree required
+ Four or more years of experience in related fields (e.g., grants management, development grant writing, journalism, speech writing, preparation of programmatic materials, such as brochures and websites)
+ Strong communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse personalities and all levels of university personnel, as well as the research administration and funding agency community
+ A strong background or interest in biomedical science
+ Ability to work collaboratively, be responsive to feedback, and be sensitive to deadlines
+ Understand the need for discretion in handling confidential information
+ Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint) required; experience working with other programs, such as fundraising software/Blackbaud CRM, Keynote, Adobe Creative apps (Photoshop) is desired

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
