The Opportunity:

The Indigenous Health Simulation Educator (IHSE) who supports the Assistant Director for Native American Health Sciences (NAHS), Center for Native American Health (CNAH), and the Indigenous Health Simulation Educator (IHSE) is an unprecedented and unique role that will support the mission, purpose and goals of the Native Health Sciences and will work collaboratively with leadership, healers, faculty, and staff across the institute to ensure evidence-based clinical standards and simulation best practices are integrated from the Indigenous lens.

TheIHSEis primarily responsible for managing and maintaining daily operations of an Indigenous culturally centered health and clinical simulation space by operating the simulation suites’ overall space, equipment, technologies, Indigenous standardized patient program, clinical simulation case scenario curriculum, scheduling and coordinating simulation workshops and instruction, supervising oversight of the traditional medicine rooms, storage, plants, work, scheduling tribal herbal knowledge keepers to present, and providing expertise in the area of culturally centered clinical simulation pedagogies.

TheIHSEassists the Director and faculty within theCNAHsimulation space with culturally and clinically appropriate equipment purchases, inventories, simulation room set-up and take down, application of healing modalities and moulage, recording and playback of simulations, maintenance and operations of manikin/s, audio, visual, surrounding simulation lab equipment, trainer kits, and other inventory within the CNAH’s Indigenous Clinical Simulation suites and spaces.

Additionally, theIHSEwill provide curricular and assessment guidance for educational activities related to simulation.

This includes assist in coaching, teaching, and support of Indigenous Healers and faculty who author and present Indigenous based clinical patient case scenarios and other healing modality and perspective teachings.

At times, this may include tribal community members who provide teachings from within the Center’s simulation spaces as well.

TheIHSEwill also assist the Assistant Director ofNAHSandCNAH, by supporting the scheduling of Indigenous Healer cohort training sessions, simulations withWSUHealth Sciences students and pre-health students, internal and external stakeholders and tribal community members, and event planning within theCNAH.

TheIHSEwill also provide expertise in the areas of co-developing internal culturally meaningful and sustainable simulation policies, procedures, co-teach or teach health, culturally centered, and/or clinical simulation with Indigenous healers as to balance western clinical standards with Indigenous perspectives, and assist in coaching and supporting Indigenous standardized patients with their roles in simulation.

This includes collaboration in simulation professional development to design, implement, facilitate, and debrief manikin-based, standardized patient, virtual simulation, and other simulation modalities.

The duties of this role will include maintenance of simulation equipment including partial task trainers and low to high-fidelity manikins.

Additionally, this position will be responsible for collaborating closely with the College of Medicine and Nursing simulation faculty and staff, and faculty within the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

This role will assist with student simulation support and event planning.

This position supports Interprofessional Education (IPE), immersive simulation experiences, and other scheduled patient simulation learning activities.

This position has no responsibility for providing direct care to patients.

This position collaborates and works closely with the Director ofNAHSandCNAH, faculty and staff ofNAHSandCNAH, Indigenous Healers and tribal community members who contribute to the design, curriculum, instruction, and support of the simulation spaces, teachings, and events, to meet the needs of day-to-day center operations.

As this unique role requires minimum, clinical simulation operations, direct clinical patient care experience, and/or teaching experience, and they will be working with Indigenous healers, community members, and will require sensitivity to the unique healing perspectives and curriculum that will be taught within simulation, it is preferred the applicant has experience or knowledge working with Indigenous peoples or is willing to be trained in this area.

Duties & Responsibilities Include:

Simulation Management: 50%

  • Act as the primary point of contact for the Indigenous health and clinical simulation space, both internal and external constituencies while providing excellent customer service in keeping with the values and mission ofNAHSandCNAH.

  • Collaborate with Indigenous Healers, faculty, and department/academic leadership to develop, plan, and implement state of the art simulation experiences in accordance with best practices in simulation education, and in alignment with curricular goals through the Native American lens.

  • Design healthcare simulation-based learning and assessment activities that meet specific course outcomes.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and development of initiatives for the integration of Indigenous based simulation in clinical education and curriculum.

  • Coordinate simulation-based training activities for internal or community partners including the health science campus colleges of medicine, nursing and pharmaceutical sciences and student simulation needs.

  • Develop assessment, research, or other tools and steps necessary to evaluate instruction, learner, and standardized patient impacts of the Indigenous health simulation center’s work.

  • Supports Interprofessional Education (IPE) experiences including immersive simulation experiences or other scheduled activities.

    Provides expertise in culturally centered clinical simulation pedagogies consistent with healthcare simulation standards of best practice.

  • Advise department/program faculty/ stakeholders in simulation methodology, technology, and best practices with a focus on patient centered teaching to improve efficiencies across the healthcare continuum.

  • Facilitates role playing applications, props placement, training kits, healing modalities and moulage set-up before and after simulations to create a culturally relevant and virtual healthcare setting.

  • Operates simulation manikin’s sessions based on priority identified by simulation Indigenous Healers and faculty.

  • Train Indigenous healers and faculty in the use of simulation equipment, scenario development, briefing and de-briefing for the Indigenous Clinical Space.

  • Manages the recruitment, database, scheduling, outreach and training of standardized patients (SP’s).

  • Serves as a resource for Indigenous healers and faculty utilizing simulation.

  • Conducts tours and simulation sessions for internal/external groups and/or individuals.

  • Maintains and cares for inventory of supplies and equipment as needed for simulation.

  • Provides recommendations for budget and purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials related to simulation.

  • Performs basic preventative maintenance and up-grades of simulation equipment.

  • Collaborates with the Assistant Director and Director ofNAHSandCNAHtoward future needs or repair of simulation equipment.

  • Attends meetings or continuing education to maintain currency with culturally embedded understandings of Indigenous simulation and simulation technology and use.

  • Maintains current knowledge of simulation equipment catalogs and operation manuals.

  • Operates and maintains audio/visual equipment used in simulation.

  • Assist with data entry for various record keeping.

  • Records video and takes photos as requested for university events and programs, including lectures, presentations, and marketing.

  • Plans innovative approached to education problems that may involve the use of instructional material in traditional for or in specifically designed original forms.

  • Collaborates with and works closely with the Assistant Director and Director ofNAHSandCNAH, faculty and staff ofNAHSandCNAH, Indigenous Healers and tribal community members who contribute to the design, curriculum, instruction, and support of the simulation spaces, teachings, and events, to meet the needs of day-to-day center operations.

  • Administrative & General Reporting: 30%

  • Prepares analysis and narrative reports regarding Indigenous Clinical Simulation activities.

  • Works with faculty, staff, students and other to report findings and outcomes of learner and participant impacts and outcomes.

  • Analyzes, responds to, and partners to resolve issues which may impact the student and community teaching and learning experience.

  • Ensures simulation engagements with other campus, internal, and external partners are set-up and managed to ensure a successful engagement.

  • Reviews requests and recommends how best to support.

  • Develops and provides presentations and training programs regarding the support for the successful engagement and use of the Indigenous Clinical Simulation suites.

  • Attend and/or present in seminars, conferences, in-service trainings, and staff meetings as needed.

  • Participates in simulation research.

  • General Support: 15%

  • Provides administrative support to the Assistant Director ofNAHSandCNAH, along with other simulation lead faculty.

  • Assists with the development of Indigenous Clinical Simulation policies and procedures.

  • Assists in seeking further development and funding opportunities for the Indigenous Clinical Simulation suites.

  • Manages the creation of workflows and best practices for the simulation space.

  • Keeps the Assistant Director ofNAHSandCNAHinformed of daily operations and needs pertaining to Indigenous health simulation work and center.

  • Other: 5%

  • Perform other related work as required.​

    This is a full (100% FTE), permanent position.

    This position is overtime eligible.

    Monthly Salary: $4,216 to $5,666 | Range #47 | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.

    In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position.

    Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

    Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with major study in a basic applied science, such as clinical simulation or health professions related field, computer science, information technology, or another related field.

    Relevant experience may be substituted for education.

    AND two years of full-time experience as a Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2; OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Prior experience with simulation education and/or standardized patients.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the features and capabilities of basic multimedia equipment, including recording equipment and operating video andDSLRcameras.

  • Basic knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.

  • Basic knowledge of computer networking.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal, written and electronic communication skills.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to excel both independently and as a team member in a lively, collaborative environment.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and positive energy regarding professional education.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license and meet requirements in accordance withSPPM7.10 and departmental driving standards.


  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in areas of clinical simulation, health or allied health professions, computer science, information technology, or another related field.

  • Certified Healthcare Operations Specialist (CHOS) Certification or Medical Simulation Operations certificate is preferred.

  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Education (CHSE) Certification is preferred.

  • Clinical experience such as an RN,CRN,LPN, Paramedic,EMT, ER Technician, or other related health profession.

  • Two years of demonstrated experience working in simulation lab with manikins or other high-fidelity equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience working with simulation software including B-Line Medical and Laerdal.

  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples, communities, cultures, healing perspectives, or other related experience.
