Overview

Assistant Professor – AI and Writing Program Administration.

The Department of English at The Ohio State University is hiring a tenure-track assistant professor with a research specialization in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and interest or experience in Writing Program Administration.

Position Overview

Applicants should have an active research agenda exploring the impact, implementation, and/or teaching of AI in rhetoric and writing studies and should be positioned to be able (post-tenure) to administer writing programs.

Additional consideration will be given to candidates with complementary expertise in disability studies, community writing/literacy, business and technical writing, or digital media studies.

This position is part of a strategic hiring plan in Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy (WRL) designed to support cutting-edge writing programming and pedagogy.

The hire will work in coordination with Ohio State’s AI Fluency Initiative, helping develop core values to guide the integration of AI in the Department of English’s writing programs: Writing and Information Literacy in English (WIL-E), Writing in the Themes, Business and Professional Writing, and Technical and Scientific Writing.

The person will maintain a robust research program in AI and writing and rhetoric studies and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in WRL.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a productive research program.
  • Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Demonstrate excellence in student mentorship.
  • Support departmental operations as an active citizen through service on committees, project assignments, and (post-tenure) writing program leadership.

Education And Experience

Required: This appointment begins August 15, 2026.

ABDs are welcome to apply.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English, rhetoric, writing studies, or a related field by August 15, 2026.

Evidence of academic achievement and plans for continued scholarly excellence in AI and rhetoric and writing studies is expected.

All candidates should provide evidence of interest in or experience with Writing Program Administration, and of effective undergraduate teaching with diverse student backgrounds and learning styles.

Desired: Secondary research interest in disability studies, community writing/literacy, business and technical writing, or digital media studies.

Evidence of effectiveness of, or preparation for, graduate teaching, advising, and mentoring is a plus.
