Overview

Position: Master Technician, Audio & Electrics

Location: Hopkins Center, Hanover, NH

Employment type: Regular Full Time; 9 months per year; 0.75 FTE; 40 hours per week (September through May)

Schedule: Work requires irregular hours, including nights, weekends and overtime.

Onsite only.

Reporting to: Senior Production Manager.

This position is classified as IATSE and provides technical support to meet complex audio and lighting requirements through a master’s level of skill in all aspects of the trade.

The Hopkins Center presents and produces live arts events and supports College events and functions.

Responsibilities

  • Sound/Audio Support (30% of time): design, operation, oversight, and execution of sound system requirements for rehearsals, performances, and events.

    Manage analog/digital mixing consoles, front of house and monitor systems, microphones, wireless coordination, recording systems, audio software, and related input/output documentation.
  • Lighting Support (description integrated into responsibilities; 30% total listed elsewhere): may design, execute, and participate in all aspects of lighting instrumentation, including programming, operating, or supervising lighting consoles, and hanging/focusing equipment from heights.

    Understands lighting plots and paperwork.
  • Video Support (20% of time): install and operate video projectors, display equipment, cameras; basic video editing for live media; assist in setup and operation of PowerPoint and digital media for live and streamed events.
  • Carpentry/Repair/Maintenance and Miscellaneous Support (15% of time): install and assemble scenery and gear; operate safe loading of weights for flying scenery and electrics; repair and maintain audio and stage equipment; manage inventory and assist with policy/protocol development; coordinate backstage activities during rehearsals and performances; assist in loading/unloading equipment and vehicle transport.
  • Training/Coaching/Safety (5% of time): supervise student and union work crews; provide instruction as requested; ensure safe use of stage equipment and implementation of safe technical practices; CPR training may be provided.
  • Collaborate with production teams to support artist needs, directors, and designers; respond to production demands and ensure safety and efficiency of technical operations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications – Education and Experience

  • Associates or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Associate’s degree in Technical Theater or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience in technical production of the performing arts.
  • Proficiency with ETC lighting console programming.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and continued qualification as an Approved Driver under the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Technical knowledge of theatrical and concert lighting, carpentry, and video; familiarity with applicable software.
  • Ability to train and oversee student and Union personnel in lighting, carpentry, and video technologies.
  • Basic knowledge of concert and theatrical sound equipment.
  • Familiarity with transporting musical equipment safely.
  • Proficiency with computers and software including Microsoft Office, Google, and cloud platforms.
  • Membership in IATSE required upon hiring.
  • Strong collaboration, diplomacy, and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to working in an equitable, anti-racist, anti-biased environment; related training a plus.
  • Physical requirements: bending, kneeling, climbing, standing; working in cramped or awkward positions; lifting up to 50 pounds; exposure to electrical hazards; work at heights on ladders, man lifts, or rigging grids; driving trucks up to 28’ (non-CDL).
  • Irregular hours including nights and weekends.
  • Potential need to wear protective clothing and PPE (gloves, goggles, masks, ear protection) as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Theatre or equivalent.
  • 5 years of experience in technical production for live arts.
  • Proficiency with Lightwright, Vectorworks, Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficiency with Wireless Workbench, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Logic software.
  • Experience with computer networking of theatrical equipment in live arts.
  • Experience with online streaming and video production front-end/back-end software and services.
