Primary Purpose
The Automotive Instructional Assistant is responsible for evening operation of the Tool Room and assist self- paced students in the Automotive Spaces.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

+ Responsible to maintain the Tool Room in good order.

(i.e., tools cleaned and put away promptly, etc.)

+ Responsible to maintain and repair equipment and training aids – including service records of equipment, both unexpected failures and scheduled maintenance.

+ Check equipment in and out to instructors and/or students based on current and future established procedures.

+ Report an inventory shortages or other problems that occur using the e-mail system.

+ Be alert to security and safety concerns in accordance with OHSA and COCC guidelines.

Secure doors of rooms not in use.

Promptly report all matters of security of immediate safety to Campus Public Safety.

Promptly intervene with any OHSA violation or potential safety concern.

+ Assist instructors with equipment set up.

+ Provide good customer service by providing efficient service to staff and students.

+ Assist new students to the operation of automotive program procedures utilized in the individualized instructional-technology labs.

+ Monitor student activities in the automotive lab spaces.

+ Monitor automotive labs as directed by supervisor.

+ Check in and reissue automotive program equipment.

+ Perform other essential functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.


+ Ability to communicate by writing, phone, and email.

+ Ability to monitor and assist students in the general daily operation of the Automotive labs.

+ Familiarity with tools (both hand and power) used in the Automotive lab.

+ Ability if needed to call for service and/or support for laboratory equipment when directed by supervisor, or if scheduled maintenance is due (annual lift inspection and certification by third party vendor)

+ Ability to maintain inventory of department and program supplies accurately with monthly reports to supervisor

+ Ability to initiate and perform work without supervision.

+ Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.

+ Ability to work with Automotive Program Director, faculty, Department Chair, Instructional Dean and other COCC staff at all levels.

+ Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.

+ Ability to operate and oversee the operation of computers and other written materials including familiarity with and ability to use Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, and simple Excel documents.

+ Ability to verbally communicate effectively with others, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.

+ Ability to use sound judgement and independently solve problems within general guidelines with an emphasis on safety and efficiency.



Ergonomic Requirements
Work hours are determined by the supervisor and vary based on business needs and locations.

Position assignments may be assigned an alternate schedule to service the campus needs.

Work is typically performed standing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee can be required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms.

Requires sufficient hearing and speech ability, for ordinary telephonic conversations.

Requires to write, read written materials and computer screens, and ability to use telephonic conversations.

Occasional lifting up to 25lbs.

All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.


Minimum Requirements

+ 2 years of Automotive classwork or experience
