$6,750.00 - $7,083.00 Per Month ($81,000.00 - $85,000.00 Annually)

Position Summary


Under the direction of the Assistant Vice President of Academic Technology, the Instructional Designer broadly supports faculty on the effective uses of academic technologies in teaching, learning, and scholarship and coordinates a range of training and initiatives supporting student success and academic excellence.

The position works with SF State instructors and others to support the redesign or creation of well-designed courses and engaging, accessible course content delivered in an effective manner using available technology and digital tools.

It works within an instructional design team and with colleagues across the Academic Technology (AT) unit to provide support to faculty, academic programs, and campus-wide instructional needs.

Activities include instructional design engagements, individual and group consultations, training/workshop development and delivery, instructional materials development, and user support.

In addition, this position provides technical project coordination and support for academic technology initiatives, which may include faculty development programming, online curriculum development, support for accessible instructional materials, and assessment support, and/or campus communications and outreach.


Position Information


Consultation and Support:

  • Provide consultations with instructors, departments and colleges on sound and evidence-based teaching and learning with technology strategies, using high-impact instructional design practices to increase student success.

  • Manage intake of support requests, service queues, and support engagement methods.

    Provide timely responses to requests, ongoing feedback, and follow-ups to support a transparent customer service process.

  • Develop and maintain self-help materials such as support documentation, media, or other methods to support course redesign and optimizing teaching in the context of the learning management system.

  • Aid faculty in researching campus-based technologies or tools that align with campus standards, compliance, and meet effective teaching and learning.

  • Program and Initiative Support:

  • Provide direct support to California State University initiatives including Affordable Instructional Materials, Quality Online Teaching, and Course Match.

  • Assist in the development and delivery of campus-based programming or initiatives that address core needs for teaching and learning with technology.

  • Provide an instructional design perspective to academic technology projects that support teaching and learning environments.

  • Participate and provide support to CEETL faculty development initiatives offered in partnership with AT or which have a significant technology component.

  • Training, Events, and Community:

  • Collaborate on the development of and deliver workshops, trainings, and institutes that advance effective use of technology in teaching and learning practices or address key outreach needs.

  • Promote exemplary use of technology in teaching and learning through multimodal campus outreach strategies that reach all instructors (tenure/tenure track, adjunct, teaching assistants) and create broad awareness of resources.

  • Participate in faculty communities related to the teaching and learning with technology; participate in the development and cultivation of specific community groups or topics.

  • Participate in the development and delivery of events including new faculty foundations, academic retreats, recognition activities, and special topic presentations.

  • Working as part of an internal team, provide guidance and input on the design and development of instructional support materials, user documentation, and other products that support the use of AT services, learning technologies, and instructional design principles.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical information systems and application program packages is a prerequisite.

    This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study.

    Foundation knowledge and skills for the Information Technology Consultant, depending on the nature of the position assignment, may include working knowledge of common software application packages, equipment platforms, reference database systems and sources, and training methods and a basic understanding of networks, data communication, and multimedia systems.
     
    • The career level is broad and includes intermediate through senior level positions.

    Incumbents at this level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position.

    Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems and developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in the field of Education, Instructional Technology, or related field and/or minimum 3 years’ experience in a higher educational context, providing training, support and/or curriculum development expertise to faculty and students, or equivalent;

  • Understanding and ability to apply Universal Design for Learning principles (and other effective instructional design approaches) in consultations and programming.
    • Experience developing and/or conducting formal training programs.
    • Experience with the Canvas Learning Management System in the context of teaching, support, or management; additional learning technologies, instructional content platforms, and other systems utilized to support teaching and learning.
    • Experience developing and conducting formal faculty and student training sessions.


    • Knowledge of Quality Matters and other online instruction rubrics, ability to consult and guide their use with instructors, and apply them to programming.
    • Ability to understand, analyze, and diagnose faculty, staff, and student needs and translate these needs into instructional solutions.
    • Ability to instruct faculty to integrate existing and emerging instructional and interactive technologies into their courses/programs.
    • Knowledge of accessibility principles particularly as it pertains to instructional materials, learning technologies, and course design.
    • Knowledge of instructional design theories and methodologies and ability to apply them.
    • Ability to perform research design using statistical methodology and application resources.
    • Strong organizational and writing skills.


    • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with users to effectively identify and efficiently meet their requirements.
  • Environmental/Physical/Special

  • Open office environment, classroom spaces, and on-campus facilities will be the venues for this position.

    Position works in on-campus venues and operations require on-premise engagements.

  • • Requires carrying or lifting equipment to conduct field-based work in offices, labs, and a range of campus locations.


    • Requires mobility to install, remove or relocate equipment under desks or in tight spaces.
    • Ability to respond to emergency critical system outages or issues on some evenings, weekends, or holidays.
    • Work schedule may change at times to ensure delivery of campus services, and the work-week will be adjusted accordingly.

    Evening and weekend shifts may be required based on operational need on a rotating basis.
    • Academic Technology is a service unit that supports the entire campus community.
