Instructor, Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Mathematics

Duty Schedule:

On-Site - Tsaile Main Campus.

40 hours per week.

Summary/Objective of Position:

This is predominantly a teaching position in the field of mathematics and/or computer science.

Most teaching will occur within the General Education courses or in the Associate of Science degree in Mathematics.

We are also preparing to launch associate degree programs in computer science and data science, so expertise in these areas is ideal.

Mathematics courses are also foundational to all degree programs and essential to graduate-level programs in the sciences.

Additionally, candidates interested in research can receive course load reduction to pursue sponsored projects that align with the department and college missions.

A full-time college faculty is responsible for instruction, assessment, advising, committee work, and service to the college.

Other duties may include grant management, research, or specific academic endeavors.

A college faculty is critical in creating, maintaining, assessing, and reflecting upon a learning environment where academic discipline is integrated with the college's mission to support student learning and the Diné Education Philosophy.

Description of Essential Functions of the Position

  • This is primarily an in-person position, to be located at the Tsaile, Arizona, campus or one of the external campuses on the Navajo Nation.

    Although at least half of the courses should be taught in person, this position may include hybrid or online teaching, as necessary.

  • Instruction and curriculum: Times, days, site(s) for teaching courses vary, and mode of delivery may include online teaching or traveling to external campuses.

  • Assessment of courses and programs: Faculty will provide student learning assessment with collected artifacts using rubrics for each course.

    The Academic Program Review reporting is done each semester to maintain student learning outcome reporting.

  • Academic advising and mentoring: Faculty will maintain office hours in accordance with the terms and conditions of faculty employment contractual obligations.

  • Work with other faculty, staff, and the dean to network with other institutions to articulate the coursework, and to design a collaborative framework with other schools of education, implement and enhance the program at the college toward ultimate sustainability.

    Faculty should work closely with academic advisors to ensure that students are successfully learning and to ensure that Early Alert techniques are used and reported accordingly and appropriately.

  • Service on committees: Faculty are expected to meet contractual workload and to make up workload expectations, including services on standing committees.

  • Service to the college through student organizations, advising student learning, and a disappearing task force.

    Prepare documents, reports, and routine correspondence in a timely manner; collect student data and provide information accordingly; promote and use data-driven decision-making.

  • Other assignments such as grant management, research, or specific academic endeavors.

    Grant oversight may include research projects and outreach services to local schools.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

    Faculty may be given additional duties to ensure that student support services are maintained.

    Other activities may include TCUP Activities regarding annual events, such as AIHEC student activities and scholarly competitions.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

Minimum:

  • Master's degrees in mathematics and computer science.

Preferred:

  • PhD in either mathematics or computer science, with a strong background in the other discipline.

Knowledge:

  • The ideal candidate for this position must have an active interest in advancing computer science and mathematics education designed for tribal colleges and universities.

  • Preferred candidates will have an interest in computational mathematics as applied to tribal communities.

Skills:

  • Must have great communication (written and oral), social, and organizational skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies for the purpose of building professional relationships.

  • Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory.

  • Candidates should have experience with online/hybrid course and homework tools, such as ALEKS and Knewton-alta.

Abilities:

  • Effective communication in written, spoken, and non-verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work with others.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment, including; use of personal computer; viewing a monitor; entering and retrieving data; use of a printer, copier, scanner; filing documents and information; ability to attend and participate in meetings and trainings; moderate physical activity; extended periods of sitting, standing or walking.

  • The work environment may be fast-paced with deadlines.

  • Some in- and out-of-state travel may be required.

  • Must be or willing to be certified in First Aid/CPR/AED, Fire Safety, Mental Health First Aid, SafeTalk or similar, ASIST (Suicide Intervention), Food Handlers, etc.
