  • Beyond the required education and experience, instructors must have a passion for what they teach and have teaching styles that support student success.

    Instructors are responsible for following Division and College procedures in support of teaching and learning.

    The assigned location for this position is at the Lane Community College’s main campus located in Eugene, Oregon.

    Required Experience:
  • Two (2) years working in a lab environment as a phlebotomist.

  • Six (6) months of adult instructional experience.
  • Licensure or Certification Requirements
  • Holds ASCP‐BOC or ASCPi -BOC certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or Phlebotomy Technician.

  • Current certification in CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and First Aid, or the ability to obtain it prior to employment.

  • Has a baccalaureate degree or higher

  • Participation in instructor supervised/unsupervised, formal learning courses, seminars, self-study, and workshops on clinical pathology, laboratory medicine, and patient care

  • Demonstrates adequate knowledge and proficiency in their content areas

    Position Purpose: The Phlebotomy Instructor position is essential in training and forming highly skilled Phlebotomist technicians by applying approved and effective techniques of student supervision, motivation, and classroom management; and appropriate curriculum and instructional materials for the assigned subject area.

    They will be responsible for ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment, as well as providing guidance and support for students to succeed in gaining the necessary knowledge and skills in preparation for the certification.

    Essential Functions:
  • Participation in teaching courses

  • Evaluation of student achievement

  • Development of curriculum, policy and procedures

  • Assessment of program outcomes

  • Develop and maintain a variety of administrative records; prepare reports as necessary; safely and effectively operate various equipment appropriate for the assigned instructional area.

  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with staff, the public, and other agency personnel

  • Perform the job safely, demonstrate and teach effectively the technical area(s) of Certified Phlebotomy Technician specifically to train individuals in the techniques of the following:
    Infection Control, Standard/Universal precautions and safety
    Anatomy and physiology of body systems with emphasis on the circulatory system
    The appropriate Medical Terminology
    Proper identification of Patient and Specimens; the importance of accuracy in overall patient care
    Proper selection and preparation of skin puncture site selection, including selection of antiseptic
    Blood Collection Equipment, types of tubes and additives, proper order of draw when additives are required, and special precautions
    Post-puncture care
    Appropriate Disposal of sharps, needles and waste
    Advanced infectious disease control and biohazards
    Anti-coagulation Theory
    Knowledge of pre-analytical sources of errors in specimen collection, transport processing and storage
    Anatomical site selection and patient preparation
    Risk factors and appropriate responses to complications which may arise from phlebotomy
    Recognition of problems with test requisitions, specimen transport and processing
    Corrective actions to take for problems in test requisitions, specimen transport and processing
    Application of basic concepts of communication, interpersonal relations, stress management, professional behavior, ethics and legal implications of phlebotomy
    Quality assurance in phlebotomy necessary to provide accurate and reliable laboratory test results
    Legal issues related to blood collection

  • Problem solve and manage sensitive information with appropriate awareness of FERPA standards; maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the privacy needs of students

  • Other duties as assigned

    Works under the general direction of the Dean of Health Professions, Health and Physical Education and the Associate Dean/Director of Nursing.

    Physical Demands/Working Environment: This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that include office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors.

    This position requires that an employee is able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; bend, kneel, stoop,reach, and manipulate objects; perform cognitive and psychometric work for extended periods of time.

    Remain on their feet for extended periods of time.

    This position may work with individuals who may be hostile or abusive.

    Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

    Assist students in positioning patients.

    Work safely.
