Position Description

DEFINITION:
The Wooden Boat Building Instructor is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating instruction within the Wooden Boat Building program, including curriculum development and student assessment.

This role involves collaborating with program leadership to set goals, maintain instructional quality, and ensure alignment with industry standards.

The instructor also supports recruitment and retention efforts, manages instructional materials and equipment, and upholds safety and operational efficiency.

Ongoing coordination with faculty, student services, and industry partners is essential to the program’s success.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from the Program Director, Boat Building and Manufacturing Programs

    ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    Essential Functions:

  • Plan, direct, and participate in the instruction for the Wooden Boat Building program; develop supplemental materials and tests; maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for the Wooden Boat Building program including curriculum development and instructional coordination.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement and review with the program director.
  • Develop and draft materials necessary for instruction with the direction and approval of the program director.
  • Other Important Functions:
  • Assess material, supply, and equipment needs for the Wooden Boat Building program; submit requests for the ordering of supplies to the program director.

    Help maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in the academic program efforts to recruit and retain students; coordinate the development, review, and revision of program publications, publicity and other community relations’ activities.
  • Work with industry partners and faculty to ensure our programs are teaching the most up to date techniques and the latest industry trends.
  • Coordinate activities with student services in the implementation of CFCC Wooden Boat Building admission, progression, and graduation policies.
  • Ensure the adherence to safe and appropriate work practices and procedures.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Qualifications

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Knowledge of:

  • Safe operation and maintenance of all hand and stationary power tools.
  • Sharpening and proper use of all hand tools normally used in boat building.
  • Lofting flat, deadrise and round-bilged boats.
  • Building station molds or frames for set-up on a strong back.
  • Determining planking deductions and bevels.
  • Determining stem bevels.
  • Developing raked and radiused transoms.
  • The set-up and use of a steam box.
  • Various types of planking methods including plank-on-frame, lapstrake, strip and cold molded.
  • Installing bulkheads and exterior joiner work.
  • Building interior joiner work, including: doors, drawers and carcasses.
  • Boat finishing techniques, including: staining, varnishing, and painting with one-part or two-part paints.
  • Organizational and management practices as applied to the planning, analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs.
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
  • Principles and practices of curriculum development and instructional strategies.
  • Current trends, research and development in the area of assignment.
  • Ability To:
  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Analyze problems; identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Effectively direct the provisions of the academic area to which assigned in support of the college programs.
  • Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:Making observationsReading and writingCommunicating with othersOperating assigned equipmentHandling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:Standing or sitting for extended periods of timeOperating assigned equipmentHandling varied tasks simultaneously Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:Making sound decisionsResponding to questionsDemonstrating intellectual capabilities

  • EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

    Minimum Education/Training:
  • Diploma in Wooden Boat Building or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent training.
  • Preferred Teaching Requirements:
  • Previous teaching experience at the community college level is desirable.
  • Two to three years of increasingly responsible classroom instruction experience.
  • Two to three years of work experience in the boat building industry or related industry.
  • Minimum Experience:
  • Two years of relevant experience in accounting or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
