INTERDISCIPLINARY ENGINEER Job Opening In Patuxent River – Now Hiring Naval Air Systems Command

Summary You will serve as Principal Technical Manager for the Drives and Mechanical Systems in the Air Systems Group, Technical Director Office of NAVAIRWARCENAC DIV.

The Secretary of Defense has ordered a department-wide hiring freeze subject to certain limited exceptions.

This position is subject to the DoD hiring freeze.

Offers of employment related to this vacancy announcement will not be executed until the position has an approved exemption.

Responsibilities You will be the subject matter expert and recognized technical authority (national and international) for matters pertaining to aircraft drive systems and engine mechanical systems.

You will provide leadership, direction and definitive authoritative technical advice to Naval Aviation programs in all stages of development and support.

You will be the National lead for advancement of rotorcraft drive systems research, technology development, and transition.

You will established overall Navy policy for Propulsion and Power Drive Systems design, development and qualification.

You will direct advancements of state of the art diagnostics and prognostics for drives and mechanical systems.

You will lead teams of other scientists and engineers including government and contractor in the identification, maturation, certification and implementation of technologies pertinent to Naval Aviation needs.

You will be responsible for development and execution of RDT and E and in-service engineering efforts for aircraft drives and engine mechanical systems across all Naval Aviation programs and platforms, including new technology application.

You will represent the Navy at industry and international technical meetings.

There is NO requirement to prepare a narrative statement specifically addressing the Technical Qualifications (TQs).

#1.

Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Drives and Mechanical Systems technologies to include drive systems, engine mechanical systems, gearboxes, drive shafts, clutches, and propulsion bearings.

#2.

Knowledge of DoD acquisition policy and strategy for RDT&E solutions for Manned and Unmanned Aircraft and Aircraft Systems.

Uses tools such as modeling and simulation, model based systems engineering, set-based design, and/or live virtual constructive environments in an RDTE setting.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: For Professional Engineering Series: A.

Degree: Engineering.

Successful completion of a bachelor's or higher engineering degree from an accredited college or university.

To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

-or- B.

Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (I) Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.

For example, an applicant who attains registration through a State Board's eminence provision as a manufacturing engineer typically would be rated eligible only for manufacturing engineering positions; or (II) Written Test -- Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico; or (III) Specified academic courses -- Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A.

The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an engineering program as described in paragraph A; or (IV) Related curriculum -- Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

Ordinarily there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.

(The above examples of related curricula are not all inclusive.) An advanced degree of Master's or Ph.D. in one of the educational fields listed above is highly desirable.

Additional Information Senior Scientific Technical Manager (SSTM) positions are positions which exceed the DP-05 (GS-15 equivalent).

SSTMs provide a continuity of technical leadership and oversight that is needed to ensure long term stewardship of an organization's technical capabilities.

Typically, applicants for SSTM positions are expected to have a graduate degree, significant research or development experience, and a national or international reputation in his/her field and are recognized throughout the applicable community as a renowned expert.

SSTM positions are in the competitive service.

This position is not covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
