The Engineering Internship Program is geared toward current college students who have a passion for Engineering and an interest in Consumers Energy and the energy industry.

The Engineering Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles of skill development, ability enhancement, and knowledge application – an experience designed to be complementary to traditional classroom instruction.

What you will do: 

Current college students of all levels will work as part of a larger team to provide hands-on support and design/development for various engineering aspects of our business.

This could include work in energy delivery – electric engineering, gas engineering, energy operations, and more – all while helping create a better tomorrow for the communities we serve! In addition to working alongside full-time employees carrying out the engineering function for Consumers Energy, Engineering Interns will have the option to participate in a number of additional optional events within the program.

This includes intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.

Electrical Engineering Intern assignments may include opportunities in:

  • Low Voltage Distribution Planning

  • Distribution Standards and Materials

  • High Voltage Distribution Lines Design and Standards

  • Instrumentation & Control, Design, and Standards

  • Low Voltage Distribution Engineering

  • Substation Design and Standards

  • System Control & Monitoring

  • Plant Engineering

  • Project Engineering

  • System Engineering

  • Along with many more!

    IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting does not represent a specific position and is posted for the purpose of collecting resumes for students interested in a Electrical Engineering internship opportunity with Consumers Energy.

    Opportunities could include summer 2026 Internships, fall or Co-Op (part-time year-round).

    We encourage you to apply if you possess the following

    Actively enrolled and pursuing an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in Engineering, with a specific focus in Electrical Engineering.

    The following MUST be true to be eligible for an Intern role.

  • A current student: currently pursuing Bachelor's in Engineering at ABET school OR
    currently pursuing a Master's in Engineering at ABET school OR
    currently pursuing an Engineering-related Master's while having completed a Bachelor's in Engineering at ABET school

  • Minimum GPA requirement of 2.7 or higher.

  • Must have reliable transportation
  • This role will require reporting to an assigned headquarter.

    Leaders will discuss
    the work arrangements which best fit the nature of the work along with overall business needs.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to new assignments and projects

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

  • Attitude and aptitude to learn new skills and concepts

  • Ability and willingness to work independently or as part of a team in order to complete tasks

  • Prior work and/or internship experience

  • Hands-on experience with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
