Job description

Job Summary

The Interpreter/Transliterator’s primary function is to act as the facilitator of communication between the student with a hearing impairment, teachers, fellow students and other personnel in the building.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interprets/transliterates the message, conveying content and spirit of the speaker.
  • Interprets/transliterates all classroom discussion and conversations.
  • Respects confidentiality in all areas of their interpreting/transliterating assignments.
  • Researches current signs for special vocabulary prior to need.
  • Meets with students to discuss signs for class related vocabulary.
  • Fosters independence in students
  • Avoids advising, counseling, or interjecting personal opinions into the interpreted/transliterated instruction or within the educational assignment.
  • Acts as a member of the educational team by:Facilitating information between the student and team membersProviding input about the student’s preferred language/communication (i.e.: ASL/PSE) method and their needs/strengths within that mode of communicationProvides information to the team and student about appropriate use of interpreter and understanding the interpreter’s role
  • Acts so as not to be utilized as an instructor, tutor, or aide in the school setting.
  • Strives to maintain high professional standards in compliance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing’s Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Dresses in a manner appropriate to the interpreting profession and educational setting.
  • Models the WJCC Strategic Plan Values: Individualism, Integrity, Innovation, Accountability and Collaboration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Interpreter/Transliterator must hold a VQAS level III, EIPA 3.5, or NIC certification
  • Interpreter/Transliterator shall strive to further their knowledge and skills through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with professional colleagues, and reading of current literature in the field.

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

    Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact as defined by the ability to see, read, talk, and hear; may require long periods of standing; significant use of hands and upper body.
