Overview

The Hunter College Department of Film and Media Studies invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Journalism beginning in Spring 2026.

Our ideal candidate will have a record of professional achievement as a journalist, a significant body of published work and experience as a writer and editor.

The candidate will also show a demonstrated ability to teach multiplatform journalism at the university level and a demonstrated willingness to work with students from diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

We are interested in candidates with professional experience in a multiplatform newsroom producing narrative journalism and deeply reported investigative journalism.

Experience with visual and audio storytelling is essential while experience with artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to support newsgathering, audience engagement and community-connected journalism is preferred.

A successful candidate should also have the ability to produce a body of substantial work that will make a significant contribution to the field of journalism.

The workload is 18 assignable hours per year, which is typically a 3-3 course load.

Additional duties may include course curriculum development and assessment, advising and mentoring students, committee work, coordinating Journalism Program events and the Journalism Program newsletter.

Department and Program Information

The Department of Film and Media Studies has approximately 700 full-time students majoring in two programs of study at the undergraduate level: one in Film and the other in Media Studies.

Students who wish to study Journalism major in Media Studies with a concentration in Journalism.

The Journalism Program currently has about 60 majors and 50 minors.

This 36-credit major is composed of analytical and production courses that offer a liberal arts approach to reporting and writing multimedia news and the tools and practical experiences students need to stand out in an increasingly competitive news industry.

Responsibilities

The candidate will teach multiplatform journalism to undergraduates.

Teaching opportunities could include introductory to advanced reporting and writing courses, News Literacy, Investigative Journalism, Data Visualization Journalism, audio reporting and podcasting, visual storytelling, community-based reporting and topical reporting courses about social justice, climate change, business, and sports.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Journalism.

Teaching experience at the college level.

A body of published work and a record of professional achievement in a multiplatform newsroom.
