**Position Overview:**
The SLAC MFD Light Machine Shop provides manufacturing services to fabricate devices for SLAC and other related institutions.
We're seeking a Machinist Apprentice to be part of our Apprenticeship Program.
The purpose of the Stanford/SEIU Local 2007 Joint Apprenticeship Program is to train an Apprentice to be a well-rounded Machinist to support the asset value of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
At the completion of the Apprenticeship Program, the Apprentice will possess skills of a journey level working machinist, and a California State certificate in representation of a journey level card.
The program consists of full time (40 hours per week) of on-the-job training **(OJT)** and evenings of classroom education.
Classroom training for the Machinist Apprentice will be selected from the State of California Division of Industrial Relations (DIR) list of approved schools.
If the apprentice chooses to finish all general education college courses, this will apply to attaining an A.S. degree in Machine Tool Technology.
The Apprentice will have a supervisor, work with a journey person and be assigned a mentor.
Apprentices will be exposed to various trade duties covering the curriculum coursework.
Adherence to consistent attendance at both the OJT and the classroom parts of the program is a mandated requirement.
This is a four-year fixed term position.
Although there is no guarantee of a regular continuing position at SLAC at the completion of the four-year fixed term Apprenticeship Program, this apprenticeship will provide a steppingstone towards a future certificate in a specialized field.
Through classroom work and on the job training, apprentices will be trained in necessary skills and tools of the machining trade.
**Your specific responsibilities will include:**
The Laboratory Machinist Apprentice will perform a variety of skilled work on basic assignments under supervision, or under advisement from higher level Accelerator Technologists.
Explicit technical guidance and expected results are generally provided.
The Laboratory Machinist Apprentice will be trained and required to perform the tasks while working with a journey-level Machinist or Accelerator Technologist in the following areas and equipment:
+ Shop Safety
+ Print reading
+ Deburring
+ Filing
+ Use of power tools
+ Calipers
+ Micrometers
+ Pin Gages
+ Indicators
+ Manual/Power Saw Equipment
+ Knee Mills
+ Tool Room Lathes
+ Basic Programing to include - Precision Milling/Facing; Precision Boring; Precision Threading; Precision Turning/Speeds and Precision Feeds; Precision Mill and Lathe
+ Grinding
+ Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Lathe
+ CNC Mill
+ Precision Mastercam Programming
+ Intro to Precision Electro Discharge Machining (EDM)-Sinker and Wire
**Qualifications:**
+ Be at least 18 years old at the time of employment.
+ Must be able to work independently as well as precisely follow detailed work instructions.
+ Ability to exercise stop activity authority as appropriate.
+ Ability to identify training, information, and resources needed to perform work.
+ Ability to use SLAC programs and policies to address concerns and employment issues.
+ Demonstrate ability to consistently use good judgment while facilitating the safe and efficient flow of work as well as the understanding of when, how and where to seek assistance from technical and/or safety experts as well as report up through line management when appropriate.
+ Demonstrate ability to understand and apply the basic elements of SLAC Work Planning and Control program (WPC) in resident areas.
+ Demonstrate understanding of and ability to comply with good shop practices and safety requirements.

**Physical requirements and working conditions:**

+ Special machine, lift, or crane operation Hoisting and Rigging training required for handling materials.
+ Constantly stand/walk

+ Occasionally perform seated work, desk-based computer tasks, twist/bend/stoop/squat, operate foot and/or hand controls
+ Rarely kneel/crawl, climb ladders, scaffolds, or other use a telephone, write by hand, sort/file, scrub, /sweep/mop.
+ Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.
