Specific Job Title: Law Librarian for Reference Services (part-time, temporary)


Reports to: Christopher Anderson, Deputy Director for Library Services


Campus: Queens

Job Summary:


Reporting to the Deputy Director for Library Services, the Law Librarian for Reference Services will provide reference and research services to law faculty and students on a part-time temporary basis at least through the end of the fall 2025 academic semester.

Reference services are provided on-site during the following hours: Monday – Thursday 9am-6pm and Friday 9am – 3pm.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform ready reference and in-depth research on both scholarly and practice-centered legal topics using online and print resources.

  • Support law students conducting research to fulfill the law school’s scholarly writing requirement.

  • Support law journal members for the law school’s 5 student journals in locating material for source-gathering and citation checking.

  • Support students and faculty in the law school’s clinical program conducting research for live-client clinics.

  • Support faculty with small-scale research projects and work closely with student research assistants as they work on larger faculty research projects.
  • Competencies

  • Working knowledge of current online and print legal research resources.

  • Competency in computer-based research tools: Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, HeinOnline, ProQuest Legislative Insight, etc.

  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to facilitate effective work relationships with others.

  • Reliable and responsive professional approach to library services.

  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills.

  • A courteous and professional demeanor characterized by a positive and customer service centered approach.

  • Ability to work well independently as well as effectively within a team.
  • Work Environment


    This position operates in a professional office environment, specifically in the Law Library.

    This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc., but is also required to use specialized hardware and software unique to the provision of library services.

    Physical Demands


    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work; reach with hands and arms; push rolling carts filled with print material; and communicate with other employees and library users.

    The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 lbs.

    Environmental Conditions


    Employees may encounter dust and/or book mold while working in the Law Library.

    The book mold has been evaluated by the University’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety and air quality testing has been completed with satisfactory results.

    Regular mold remediation work takes place throughout the year.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work


    The position is part-time and on-site.

    Working hours will be set by the Deputy Director for Library Services, but will only be scheduled Monday through Thursday between 9am and 6pm, and Friday between 9am and 3pm.

    Travel


    Travel is not required for the position.

    Required Education and Experience:


    · Master's Degree in Library Science and/or JD with substantial law library experience


    · Experience conducting research in a legal setting is required.

    Experience conducting research in an academic law library environment is preferred.

    Preferred Education and Experience:


    · Both a J.D. from ABA approved law school and an M.L.S. from ALA accredited library school.


    · Two or more years of experience in an academic law library, including legal research and reference services.
