The Southern Colorado Institute of Transportation Technology is a state-sponsored institute located at Colorado State University Pueblo (https://www.csupueblo.edu/institute-of-transportation/index.html).

The vision of the Institute is to become a versatile and responsive leader in education, training, and research that supports transformative transportation solutions.

The mission of the Institute is comprehensive and includes education, training, and research.

The Institute's current interests include ground and intermodal transportation systems' innovation, safety, and security.

The Institute partners with the Federal Railroad Administration's Transportation Technology Center just outside of Pueblo, Colorado, and is also a member of the prestigious center for Surface Transportation Testing and Academic Research (C-STTAR) a consortium of eight universities and academic research centers.

In addition, the Institute works closely with its local and state partners, ENSCO, Inc., MxV Rail, and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

SCITT is currently leading and managing over $14 million in research and workforce development projects, primarily funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Through initiatives like the Southern Colorado Transportation Conference (SCTC), tailored workforce development programs, and curriculum innovations, SCITT offers comprehensive training, seminars, and events.

These programs bring together transportation professionals, students (both traditional and non-traditional), and researchers to explore emerging industry challenges, build technical expertise, and strengthen leadership abilities—ensuring a well-prepared workforce for the evolving transportation sector.

SCITT’s initiatives emphasize hands-on learning and interdisciplinary research aimed at addressing regional and national transportation challenges.

Description of Job

The primary duties included in this .5 FTE position may be modified to suit the skills of the applicant and the changing priorities of the Institute.

Currently, the position's responsibilities include developing and teaching the curriculum on Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, designed for civil engineering and/or transportation engineering applications.

This role also involves student mentoring, advising, and providing other technical support.

The employee will serve as the primary technical representative from SCITT, which recently received a $949k grant from the US Department of Labor (DoL).

This grant supports the development of cutting-edge education and training programs in transportation technology.

Under this grant, SCITT will provide workforce training tailored to traditional, non-traditional, and displaced workers in Colorado, helping to bridge skill shortage in transportation areas.

This position offers a unique opportunity for a candidate to play a key technical role in the early stages of a pioneering transportation institute, gaining invaluable experience—especially for those aiming to advance their academic careers within the university.

This position has been funded for 2 years.

The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed upon satisfactory performance and budgetary approval from the funding agency.

Primary Duties

+ Developing and teaching academic coursework and training opportunities in the artificial intelligence and data analytics field for traditional and non-traditional students and others as guided by the institute director.

+ Research activities including research development as guided by the Institute director.

+ Assist in all SCITT-related administrative tasks, outreach activities, and grant-related responsibilities.

$38,600-$40,900 for this .5FTE, year-round position


Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights



Minimum Qualifications

+ Doctoral degree or All-but-Dissertation (ABD) in any engineering or engineering-related area
The doctoral dissertation defense must be completed by the hire date, with degree conferral within 8 months of position start

+ A record of scholarly publications

+ Experience in teaching at the university level or preparing university-level lectures

+ Experience and/or commitment to motivating, educating, and mentoring students from a wide range of backgrounds similar to that of Colorado State University Pueblo

Preferred Qualifications

+ Computer Science and Engineering and/or Information Technology background in Bachelor and/or Master level

+ Expertise in computer science and engineering, computing and systems, and civil engineering applications

+ Certifications or training in artificial intelligence and data analytics

+ Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning and Data Analytics certifications

+ Experience in a position requiring excellent written and spoken communication skills

+ Experience working in a team environment as well as in an independent capacity
