The Center for American English Language and Culture (https://caelc.virginia.edu/) (CAELC) at the University of Virginia seeks applications for a Lecturer in English as a Second Language (ESL).
This Academic General Faculty (tenure-ineligible) position is full-time (1.0 FTE) with benefits.
CAELC is a pan-university language support program tasked with supporting all international populations at UVA.
Services include assessment, support classes, and consultation with the university community concerning language learners’ needs.
This is initially a one-year appointment and is renewable contingent upon satisfactory performance and teaching needs.
Responsibilities during the academic year include teaching three English language support classes per semester; consulting/working with the UVA writing center, assisting with testing and placement; and assisting with curriculum development.
The position also includes teaching in the 4.5-week summer English for Academic Purposes program.
A master's degree in applied Linguistics, TESOL, or a closely related field is required; Ph.D. preferred.
Candidates must also have at least 2 years teaching experience at the college/university level, proficiency in a second language, experience teaching college-level writing, demonstrate good interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to work well with colleagues and students.
Preferred qualifications include:
+ experience with advanced language learners across academic fields of study;
+ experience working as part of a team;
+ experience living/working abroad;
+ experience with academic and language-learning technology, including learning management Systems;
+ experience working with mentoring students who are volunteers and in training as teachers;
+ experience with mentoring students to navigate academic integrity requirements, including the use of AI tools;
+ experience with language proficiency assessment testing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Academic General Faculty Lecturer/Instructor Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers.
The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
