Department of Native American Studies Temporary Faculty Pool

The Department


Native American Studies at Cal Poly Humboldt is more than an academic discipline.

We're a continuation of Indigenous knowledge from time immemorial, presenting a depth of Native American experience from a distinctly tribal perspective.

As the first CSU campus to offer a baccalaureate degree in Native American Studies, and still the only program of its kind in the CSU, NAS continues to develop as a stand-alone department, with active input from tribes.


Cal Poly Humboldt is not only a proven leader in serving Native American students in California, but our broad program appeals to non-Native students who are passionate about issues of social justice, sustainable living and natural resource management.

Qualifications


Unless otherwise noted below, ././.

in appropriate field with extensive experience in the area of the course, as well as successful teaching experience in the area of Native American Studies or Native American issues, evidence of cultural knowledge of and experience with American Indian people and tribes is required.

  • Tribal Sovereignty, Tribal Citizens; Tribal Governance & Leadership; Federal Indian Law; Tribal Water Rights; and Tribal Justice Systems
  • Degree: Earned ./././.

    with experience of specialization in Federal Indian Law.


    Experience: Experience and expertise in Federal Indian Law and Tribal Water Law through a breadth of knowledge with Native American curricula and/or extensive experience working with or for Indian tribes.


    Preferred: Candidates with experience teaching in higher education, especially in Native American Studies will be given preference.

    Position Type: Lecturer


    Availability: As needed
    First Review Date: Applications received by April 1st annually are given first consideration.

    Salary: Dependent on qualifications and experience.


    The salary schedule information for the Lecturer – Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:


     $5,507 - $6,677


     $6,221 - $13,224


     $6,825 - $14,523


    Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range.

    The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.

    Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA.

    The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods).

    The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities.

    Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff, many from local area California Indian tribes.

    Cal Poly Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP).

    There are also many opportunities at Humboldt to conduct research, teaching and community work on Native American history and cultures, with resources in Special Collections at the Cal Poly Humboldt library.

    The Humboldt Room in the Library has fantastic resources for tribally focused archive materials from the region.

    Humboldt strives to build a supportive and inclusive Native community and engages with Native communities through initiatives and opportunities like the annual California Indian Big Time, Indigenous People's Week, and a chance to network with other faculty and staff as part of the Cal Poly Humboldt Council of American Indian Faculty and Staff.
