General Statement of Duties



Eugene Public Library is seeking passionate, collaborative, public-service oriented people to fill 3 Library Assistant 1 positions – 2 positions at Downtown Library and 1 position at Sheldon Branch Library.

The entry level Library Assistant 1 (LA1) position performs a variety of routine and recurring duties of a physical and clerical nature in support of Circulation Services of the Eugene Public Library.

The Library Assistant 1 (LA1) is a valued member of the library team in delivering excellent customer service to the community, including at risk and vulnerable populations.

The successful candidate will participate in and provide support toward library efforts related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and access and must have the ability to respond collaboratively, respectfully and appropriately to requests of library patrons and colleagues.

This position requires the ability to work independently as well a part of a dynamic team, the ability to read small text, interaction with computers (Polaris Leap, Microsoft Suite), physical stamina and the ability to perform repetitive fine motion with hands for long periods of time such as opening items to check for completeness, pushing book carts containing approximately 50 pounds of materials, frequently bending, stooping, squatting and reaching, lifting up to 25 pounds, shelving, shifting, filing, processing, and sorting up to 600-800 materials per shift, standing for extended periods of time, walking approximately 5 miles/day.

In addition, the Library Assistant 1 must be able to work with assembly-line type automated sorting system observing all safety protocols.

Successful applicant may be assigned to any of the three Library branches and may be asked to work across locations as needed for coverage.

Circulation, Downtown Library

The Circulation work unit, housed in the Downtown Library, is seeking to fill 2 Library Assistant 1 positions.

The successful candidates will join a team of 22 Library Assistant colleagues who work collaboratively and independently to achieve our goals which include contributing to a respectful, safe, and welcoming environment for all.

The Library Assistant 1 is a valued member of the library team in delivering excellent customer service to all members of the community, including at risk and vulnerable populations, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

The Circulation work unit checks in and shelves over 2,000 materials with diverse content daily and is responsible for stacks maintenance.

In addition, the Library Assistant 1 will work with our assembly-line type automated materials handling system at the Downtown Library and must observe all safety protocols.

Sheldon Branch Library

Sheldon Branch is seeking to fill 1 Library Assistant 1 position.

The Sheldon Branch is a small neighborhood branch library with a team of 8 staff.

Sheldon Branch’s priorities are early literacy, teen services, older adult services, adults and teens with developmental and cognitive disabilities, community inclusion.

The successful candidate for the LA1 position would be an integral team member at the branch to create a welcoming and inclusive work culture and provide access to diverse, browsable materials for the community.

The LA1 position is highly physical in nature, and the LA1 is responsible for managing and implementing workflow to ensure library materials are checked in and re-shelved.

Positive communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to prioritize and switch between tasks are important to be successful in this position.

The Eugene Public Library is part of the City of Eugene's Library, Recreation & Cultural Services Department.

The Bethel and Sheldon Branch Libraries are vital to accessible service delivery for community members in underserved parts of the city.

Eugene Public Library is known for its progressive, responsive service to patrons of all demographics and works hard to incorporate new and emerging technologies into programs and services.

The library offers a diverse collection of materials in a variety of formats and consistently offers fresh educational and recreational programming.

The Library is also supported by the active Friends of the Eugene Public Library and the Eugene Library Foundation.

Schedule: Schedule will be set per business need and will be communicated as part of the interview process.

Full and part-time options available.

Must be available to work:

Downtown: Sundays: 9am-6pm, Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays: 7am-6pm, Tuesdays-Thursdays: 7am-8pm.

Sheldon: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays 9:00-6:00pm, Tuesdays 11:00-8:00pm.

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following



+ Sorts, organizes, and shelves materials using a cart or shelves; organizes items one at a time according to appropriate systems; opens storage cases ensuring correct item(s) is/are in the case(s), closes item(s), and organizes onto a cart into call number order; shelves items according to appropriate shelving protocols.

+ Routinely transports material using a book cart to shelving areas; shelves according to appropriate systems including Dewey decimal, numerical, and alphabetical; shelves items at and below waistline and above head; monitors shelves for orderly placement of materials.

Shifts materials to accommodate items.

+ Frequently operates and oversees basic functions of automated materials handling system (AMS), communicates with teammate, monitors belt status, manually organizes cart shelves, reaches into bins and onto belt, loads and; unloads bins, removes and replaces carts, performs repetitive motion actions, cleans AMS, performs basic troubleshooting of the AMS, and interacts with the automated materials handling computer software interface.

+ Assesses materials for damage and completeness during course of work; makes appropriate, minimal computer data entry adjustments to item record status as needed; follows established processes for damaged and incomplete items.

Retrieves, processes, and shelves patron hold requests; removes and processes expired hold requests.

+ Collects materials returned in manual return bins (including outside) and found on tables, chairs, and floors and throughout the library.

+ Checks materials in using computers and by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) equipment or hand using barcode scanners, when necessary.

+ Uses technology systems to keep updated on library staff information, access work schedule and desk assignments, and communicate with coworkers in positive and supportive ways.

+ Participates in various library committees; attends various library/departmental meetings.

+ Participates in career development; cross- training within the circulation section and other areas of the Library.

Provides basic information to patrons on item location, resources, and services; refers reference, online catalog, and complex policy questions to appropriate staff for assistance.

+ Ensure assigned areas are clean and orderly.

+ Participates in City and Library training.

+ Adheres to the City of Eugene's respectful work environment policy.


+ Actively supports and respects diversity, inclusion, equity, and access in the workplace.

Experience

Six months of general office or library experience or related experience working with the public or other customer service, such as:

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

Must pass a background check.

Must pass a physical assessment and drug test.

Supplemental Information


Working Conditions

Work in performed in an office-like environment.

May require frequent sitting, standing, keyboarding, hearing and speaking for extended periods.

Work may include operating a variety of office equipment and operating an automated materials handling system.

Work activities may include bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, reaching, handling and grasping of materials.

May be required to lift up to 25 pounds and pushing up to 50 lbs.

May deal with difficult people and frequent interruptions.

Bilingual Pay Benefit

Per the AFSCME contract (https://www.eugene-or.gov/Archive.aspx?AMID=71) , the City shall pay an employee an additional 5% for a required intermediate or advanced level competency.

To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center division.

Eligibility List

Candidates that are placed on the eligibility list will be notified via email which will include the duration of the list and how notification of call up will occur.
