Job description

This is a grade 6, bargaining unit position with a pay range beginning at $17.00/hour.

Scheduling may include mornings, afternoons, two or more evenings per week and Saturdays.

This position reports to the Headlands Branch Manager.

Applicants should be friendly, dependable, and customer-service driven to be successful in this programming position.

Title: Library Associate

Grade: 6

Immediate Supervisor: Department Manager or Branch Manager

Basic Function:

Performs paraprofessional library tasks in the public library system.

Library Associates work with the public, a job that is customer service driven and requires a friendly, helpful, and tactful demeanor.

Position may be full or part time and is determined by the needs of the library.



Distinguishing Features of the Class:

This classification requires the application of basic principles of library and information science.

Employees assigned to this class perform some of the duties that are done by Librarians.

The distinguishing feature of this class is that the duties include direct public service reference and information responsibility, and planning and presenting programs to the appropriate age group of the department or branch in which they serve.

Employees assigned to this class are required to provide service in accordance with the Library's mission, core values, and strategic plan.



Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists patrons in the selection, organization, and interpretation of library materials
  • Answers reference questions in person, by telephone, or email and conducts the needed research involved
  • Refers extended reference questions to professional librarians
  • Conducts education and training of patrons and patron groups
  • Selects, reviews, and weeds collection with supervisor oversight
  • Is knowledgeable in reader's advisory recommendations for the age group(s) department serves
  • Responds to patron complaints and reports on problem resolution
  • Deals promptly and effectively with difficult and demanding patrons
  • Interprets and assures the implementation of official library policy
  • Multitasks in a fast-paced environment as staff is required to be task-oriented and continue to be available for patron inquiries
  • Monitors and suggests corrections to the online catalog
  • Plans, creates PR/files, and presents programs for the age group they are assigned in the library and through outreach outside the library building
  • Gives book talks in the library and to civic groups and may write book reviews
  • Attends professional meetings, pertinent workshops, and serves on system-wide and professional committees
  • Plans and prepares displays, bulletin boards, bibliographies, and webliographies
  • May coordinate literacy programs
  • May provide services to specific or special populations
  • Assists patrons in using library computers and computer applications
  • Assists patrons in using the computer sign-on and printing system
  • Keeps computers and photocopiers operational (machines filled with paper and toner; analyzes and corrects basic machine failures)
  • Performs special projects as required
  • May perform shelving and clerk responsibilities as needed or assigned
  • Maintains neat and orderly work areas

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of library principles, methods, techniques, and procedures
  • Knowledge of reader interest levels
  • Good communication skills
  • Friendly demeanor, diplomacy, discretion, and enthusiasm for working with the general public are essential qualities for this position
  • Ability to keep confidential records and perform routine tasks
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office products and social media
  • Demonstrated competency in productivity software as well as Internet searching skills.

  • Ability to manipulate loaded book carts weighing 300 pounds over carpeted floors
  • Ability to lift library materials up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to multitask on a public service desk
  • Must display tact and courtesy
  • Desire and ability to work as a contributing member of a team environment
  • Must possess good judgment
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to adapt in a changing environment
  • Must display thoroughness and dependability

Education, Training and Experience:

Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent and up to six months of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

May require a valid driver's license.



GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LIBRARY EMPLOYEES

All Mentor Public Library Employees are expected to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills; maintain a tolerance and sensitivity to the needs of patrons and staff; maintain a positive and pleasant attitude, and be co-operative with co-workers.

All employees shall adhere to the Library's policies and procedures and support the Library's mission within the Library and in the community.

Employees shall have regular attendance, be flexible with regards to scheduling which includes daytime, evening and weekend hours; and be in adequate physical condition to fulfill the requirements of the job.
