Job description

Library Director: Our Library Director is retiring, and the Board of Trustees seeks an enthusiastic, collaborative and innovative leader to become the new Library Director.

Located in beautiful LaSalle County within a small community just minutes from Starved Rock State Park, the library district serves 4,217 residents.

The ideal candidate will effectively collaborate with a seven-member Board of Trustees and lead a knowledgeable four-member team while promoting a positive and inspiring workplace culture.

The new Library Director will actively engage with the community, staff and stakeholders to assure library services meet the needs of the community now and into the future.

Exemption Status: Exempt

Health Insurance with employer/employee cost sharing.

Current plan is Blue Cross Blue Shield noting plan and cost sharing re-revaluated each year.

Qualifications:

Experience and genuine enjoyment of working with patrons of diverse ages and ethnicities; enthusiasm, energy, accuracy, organization and service-orientation; willingness and ability to learn new library trends; ability to work independently and adapt to a fast-paced environment; ability to supervise staff and volunteers; computer literacy; commitment to ongoing professional development; dependable and flexible with regard to hours.

Bachelor’s degree preferred or related experience with increasing responsibility in library management and administration.

Exceptional candidate would have a master’s degree in library science, or library and information Science (MILS/MLIS) from an ALA accredited graduate library program.

Summary of job responsibilities

Under the general direction of the library board, is responsible for daily library operations, service and program management, and long-term development of the library.

Knowledge of library policies and procedures, good judgement and common sense; and the ability to effectively work with the public.

Other tasks, projects and duties as assigned.

Examples of work

  • Plans, organizes and manages the services of the library
  • Prepares and submits all required annual reports including IPLAR and PerCapita grant
  • Prepares the library’s annual budget & appropriation funding request for recommendation to the library board; prepares the annual levy
  • Assists board in preparation of and reports on updates to the Strategic Plan
  • Prepares grant applications and seeks funding for library services, projects, programs and facilities
  • Attends all regular and special Board of trustee meetings and attends committee meetings
  • Supervises the keeping of records and the preparation of reports and schedules
  • Establishes goals and measures library accomplishments against recognized standards including the Illinois Public Library Standards
  • Oversees preparation and compilation of monthly board meeting packet
  • Recommends policy updates to the board and communicates updated policies to staff
  • Develops library procedures, programs, and publicity with staff members
  • Recruits, selects, trains, evaluates, and supervises library staff
  • Coordinates the continued training and development of staff members
  • Prepares payroll and bills or works with the bookkeeper in the preparation of payroll and bills as appropriate
  • Oversees purchasing and weeding of the library’s collections
  • Advises, consults, and confers with the Library Board, other libraires, professionals, official (at state and local levels), citizens, and community groups
  • Represents the library to the community, organizations, and groups
  • Markets, promotes, and publicizes the library and events in various media outlets including social media.
  • Manages building and grounds including maintenance and safety
  • Assures cleanliness of the facility
  • Studies and develops the services of the library to effectively meet present and future community needs
  • Maintains an awareness of current library issues and trends affecting libraries; reads professional literature and attends workshops
  • Services as FOIA and OMA officer and as the PrairieCat Delegate

Able to provide general circulation services and copy cataloging as needed.

  • Exceptional communication skills, staff management and customer service
  • Extensive knowledge and use of general computer applications; ability to adapt to new technology and identify ways to use them for library services
  • Ability to apply intellectual freedom and confidentiality principles to library services
  • Knowledge of appropriate federal and state laws
  • Substantial knowledge of the principles, practices, and provision of library services
  • Extensive knowledge of evolving trends in library services
  • General knowledge of time management and organizational skills
  • Able to exercise initiative and independent judgment
  • Experience developing and managing budgets and knowledge of accounting procedures

Understand and follow common security and safety rules and procedures for patron, library, and staff safety

Typing on a computer keyboard and interacting with computer screens are required.
