Brief Position Overview
Mechanical & Industrial Engineering faculty members are expected to contribute to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching in areas of mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology or industrial engineering related to the applicant’s strengths.

Other responsibilities include advising and mentoring undergraduate students, participation in accreditation activities and committee assignments, and service to the university, state, and profession.

Position Details




General Statement
Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions.

Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years.

After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials.

Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program.

Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities
We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

+ Teach on-campus and/or online courses.

+ Advise, evaluate and assist students.

+ Participate in curriculum and/or course development.

+ Contribute positively and professionally to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.



Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

+ Relevant degree and experience in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Engineering or related field.

+ Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department.



Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

+ Relevant professional experience and insight into the theoretical frameworks of the field or discipline of teaching responsibility.

+ Currency in area of teaching responsibility.

+ Previous teaching experience.

The Program

The Department
The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (M&IE) Department offers ABET accredited BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Industrial Engineering.

Graduate offerings include MS degrees in Industrial & Management Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in Engineering with options in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering.

The Department is strong in both traditional and emerging areas of each discipline, with substantial laboratory facilities supporting instructional and research missions.

Available to M&IE Department faculty are collaborations with MSU’s Energy Research Institute, Center for Biofilm Engineering, Imaging and Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Magnetic Resonance Lab, Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility, Montana Microfabrication Facility, Western Transportation Institute, Wind Application Center, Montana Manufacturing Extension Center, Thermal Biology Institute, and Center for Bio-Inspired Nano-Materials.


The College
The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering comprises five academic departments (Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Gianforte School of Computing, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and is home to the following research centers: Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ), Montana Microfabrication Facility ( MMF ) and the Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility; the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center ( MMEC ); and the Army and Air Force ROTC Units.

The College enrolls approximately 4,000 students with more than 200 studying in graduate degree programs.

Doctoral degree programs include a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Engineering with options in the fields of Applied Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

The College is excited that Asbjornson Hall opened in 2019.

This innovative facility is transforming education and scholarly activity at MSU .
