Job Description Summary
The Quattrone Nanofabrication Facility (QNF) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Singh Center for Nanotechnology is seeking a Nanofabrication Process Engineer who will be responsible for developing fabrication processes and ensuring optimal fabrication operation in its cleanroom.

The engineer will join our technical staff in providing expertise and support to the QNF and its more than 600 users annually, including both internal academic researchers as well as external academic and industrial users.

The Nanofabrication Process Engineer will optimize the performance of primary assigned tools, such as, but not limited to the packaging, laser micromachining, etching, lithography, deposition, & annealing systems.

They will train lab researchers to expertly operate the instrumentation and processes, which also includes explaining and teaching the underlying physical concepts of the process and equipment, as well as develop training materials and protocols for the tools.

Additionally, the engineer will establish, monitor, and document baseline processing on assigned primary equipment, as well as develop standard operating procedures for tool operation and update them as necessary.

They may be asked to help with hands-on workshops and group training.


Job Description

Job Responsibilities
+ Train lab researchers to expertly operate the instrumentation and processes, which also includes explaining and teaching the underlying physical concepts of the process and equipment.
+ Establish, monitor, and document baseline processing on assigned primary equipment, as well as develop standard operating procedures and other documentation for tool operation and update them as necessary.
+ Work with researchers to enable new nanofabrication processes that can be written up as process recipes and added to the lab’s process recipe library.
+ Collaborate with QNF staff to create and run workshops that provide a more comprehensive understanding of nanofabrication theory and processes across multiple tools.
+ Contribute to Singh Center, NNCI and other QNF endeavors including attending and contributing to workshops, conferences and other events.



Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field and a minimum of five years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Strong mechanical inclination and troubleshooting skills.

Experience operating/troubleshooting/maintaining nanofabrication equipment and developing/documenting/maintaining fabrication processes.

Strong attention to detail, persistence, follow through, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Self-motivation with strong communication skills and personal work ethic, a sense of ownership as well as the ability to interact with a diverse customer base.


The work environment requires extensive safety training, wearing protective equipment, handling of chemicals and hazardous gases, and includes exposure to moving machinery and high noise levels.

The position involves the use of tools requiring high dexterity and requires standing, bending, crouching, stooping, and occasionally lifting 25-50 lbs.


This position is funded by a grant and is contingent, in part, upon the continued receipt of those grant funds.

Currently, we expect the position to be funded through September 2026.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job’s level.
