Working Title: Navigation Systems Radio Engineer

Job Class: Radio Engineer 1

Location: St. Paul | Telework Eligible: Yes | Full-Time

Division/Unit: Aeronautics / Aeronautics Admin Support | Work Shift/Hours: Day Shift | Days of Work: Monday - Friday

Salary Range: $31.11 - $45.98 / hourly; $64,957 - $96,006 / annually

Travel Required: In-state up to 75% (including some in-state overnight travel)

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of new AWOS and radio stations.
  • Serve as the technician of record, ensuring compliance with FAA regulations.
  • Represent the state of Minnesota in interactions with the FAA and other local agencies.
  • Install and commission new sites; hands-on site work.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot radio systems and a statewide computer network for pilots.
  • Utilize telecommunications, TCP/IP networking, RF broadcasting, phone interconnect, and advanced analytical troubleshooting skills.
  • Note: The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or OPT STEM extensions; individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of recent advanced technical working experience (within the last four years) supporting a regional or large-scale radio communications system, including installation, repair, and implementation of a variety of radio communication equipment; AND

  • Hold an FCC General Class Radio Telephone License or obtain within 6 months of hire;
  • Experience in radio frequency troubleshooting;
  • Experience with digital electronics;
  • Experience installing networking equipment using fiber optics, traditional cable, or wireless technology to move data between long and short-range sites;
  • Valid Class D Driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess a Tower Climber Certification.
  • Ability to safely work at elevations up to 50 feet in aerial lifts, on ladders, or on minimally sloped building roofs.
  • Experience in the aviation industry relating to airports.
  • Experience installing and maintaining Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS).
  • Experience with electronic and/or radio technology and design.
  • Experience with telecommunication systems, including installations.

Successful candidate must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check.

A background investigation is required, which may include SEMA4 Records Check, Criminal History Check, Employment Reference Check, Driver’s License Check, and/or Education/License Verification.
