Position Summary: The Network Field Technician is responsible for on-site technical support, network troubleshooting, and application administration across multiple locations.
This role involves installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting hardware, software, network infrastructure, and enterprise applications.
The Technician provides hands-on end-user support, ensures network connectivity, and assists with enterprise application management to maintain operational efficiency.
The position requires strong problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and the ability to collaborate with IT teams and vendors to resolve issues and improve system performance.
Key Responsibilities Networking Support: â Support Networking Team with VPN connectivity, WAN connectivity, and inter-campus communication.
â Terminate Ethernet cables (RJ45), install patch panels, racks, switches, and access points.
â Trace and install cabling; resolve physical connectivity issues.
â Configure static IPs, DHCP reservations, NAT rules, and troubleshoot DNS/DHCP.
â Diagnose and resolve user connectivity issues (e.g., Wi-Fi drops, no internet, IP conflicts).
â Troubleshoot printer and VoIP phone connectivity.
â Monitor and respond to alerts (e.g., port down, high latency); escalate as needed.
â Assist with network upgrades (e.g., switch replacement, new AP rollout).
â Participate in office moves, network expansions, and software rollouts requiring network coordination (e.g., badge systems, security cameras).
â Support Wi-Fi segmentation and security for student, faculty, and guest access.
â Work closely with Networking, Field Tech, Help Desk, and campus IT staff to resolve issues.
â Create and maintain network documentation (e.g., IP maps, equipment lists, Wi-Fi heatmaps).
Field Tech Support: â Provide in-person and remote support across locations for desktops, laptops, printers, mobile devices, and peripherals.
â Perform installation, configuration, break/fix repairs for Windows, macOS, and mobile platforms.
â Administer, troubleshoot, and support user access management, role-based permissions, and enterprise applications.
â Support backup, disaster recovery procedures, and compliance with security and licensing policies.
â Participate in security audits and maintain CJIS compliance and secure access controls.
â Assist with IT infrastructure projects, hardware deployments, and server room organization.
â Perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces or on ladders.
â Demonstrate a basic understanding of audio and visual equipment, principles, and applications.
â Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to audio and visual equipment â Set up, install, and operate audio-visual equipment for various events, including meetings, presentations, media events, and virtual events.
General IT Operations: â Shadow Network Administrators and Engineers during maintenance windows.
â Use network tools/commands (ping, tracert, ipconfig, Wireshark, etc.) for diagnostics and monitoring.
â Follow change management and ticketing procedures.
â Document procedures, resolutions, and knowledge base content.
â Provide on-call support for critical incidents.
â Ensure timely and professional communication and issue resolution.
â All other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications and Skills: â Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check and Training Course.
â Availability for on-site support, occasional travel between locations, and possible evening or weekend work.
â Associate degree in Information Technology, Network Administration, Computer Science, or a related field â or equivalent experience.
â 2+ years of experience in IT support, networking, or application administration.
â CompTIA Network+ certification is a plus.
â Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, and network-related issues.
â Familiarity with Windows, macOS, enterprise applications, and user access controls.
â Understanding of the OSI model, TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, and NAT.
â Experience with switches/routers and WAN technologies (MPLS, SD-WAN, DIA, broadband) a plus.
â Proficiency with diagnostic tools such as ping, tracert/traceroute, ipconfig/ifconfig, Wireshark, tcpdump, and Junos CLI.
â Familiarity with multi-campus network environments.
â Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, on ladders, or in data closets.
â Strong communication, documentation, customer service, and time management skills.
â Ability to manage multiple projects, adapt to change, and address moderately complex issues.
â Demonstrated ownership, self-direction, and team collaboration .
