Base pay range

$80,247.00/yr - $85,167.00/yr

Court Reporter - Trainee Positions with the NYS Courts

Location: Statewide (Positions available throughout New York State)

Base Salary: $80,247 + $4,920 for employees in NYC, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester & Rockland and $2,460 in location pay for Orange, Dutchess & Putnam.

Overview:

The New York State Unified Court System is seeking recent graduates of court reporting programs to join our team as Court Reporter - Trainees.

This unique, entry-level opportunity offers structured, on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced court reporters and court managers, preparing candidates for a successful career in the courts.

Successful candidates will serve a one-year traineeship, during which time they will receive progressively challenging assignments to build their reporting skills.

Upon successful completion of the traineeship, individuals will be promoted to the title of Court Reporter (JG-24).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a formal program in court reporting no more than two (2) years prior to appointment.

Responsibilities:

  • Record and transcribe verbatim testimony during court proceedings including:
  • Conferences
  • Calendar calls
  • Arraignments
  • Hearings
  • Perform related clerical tasks such as processing case-related forms.
  • Receive on-the-job training in all aspects of the court reporting function.
  • Be assigned progressively complex reporting tasks to develop skills.
  • Participate in cross-training assignments in various courts or for administrative hearings, as needed.
  • Work in various courts, including:
  • Civil and Criminal Courts of the City of New York
  • City, Family, District, Surrogate's, and County Courts

Assignment:

This traineeship is specifically designed for new professionals entering the court reporting field.

It provides valuable, hands-on experience within the court system and prepares individuals for advancement to full-time roles as Court Reporters.

Court Reporter - Trainees may be temporarily assigned to different courts to support operations during emergencies.
