Job description

What You Will DoThis position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1/2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.

Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 ($94,500-$154,600)Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, critical power reliability/redundancy issues, modifying buildings, and developing new structures and equipment within and around the plutonium facility.

Often in this role, engineers may perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment, demolition, installation, upgrades, and repairs.

Additionally, successful candidates may be expected to qualify as a Cognizant System Engineer (CSE) on one or more Vital Safety Systems (VSS) that support LANL Nuclear Facilities.Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 ($104,100-$172,200)In addition to the description above, engineers in this position will work alongside junior and senior engineers (e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other peers in team settings to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring and leadership.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:

  • Awareness of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Knowledge of analysis and calculations techniques to support engineered solutions.

  • Ability to effectively communicate engineering solutions both verbally and written with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software products (i.e. Word, Excel, Microsoft Teams, Outlook, etc.)
  • Additional Job Requirements for Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2:
  • Knowledge of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with preparing technical reports and studies as part of establishing and maintaining Technical Baseline for new and existing facility structural systems.
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with collection of the usage, process, safety, and other parameters of interest for the structure, system, or component.
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with design or analysis tasks, and preparation of design concepts that meet the requirements.

  • Demonstrated experience assisting with developing design details, design or analysis calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections that incorporate the applicable design requirements, as applicable.

  • Demonstrated experience assisting with evaluating and trending system health.

  • Demonstrated experience interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the customer during the development of the design.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.
  • Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

    Advanced engineering or technical degrees can be considered as experience equivalency.

    Candidates that meet the degree requirement, but do not meet the 2-year minimum experience requirement are encouraged to apply and may be considered for hire through an exception process.

    Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

    Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of controls related to equipment operation such as PLCs and relay control.

  • Knowledge of low and medium voltage electrical systems as they relate to commercial, industrial, or nuclear facilities.
  • Knowledge of the engineering design process and/or maintenance of low and medium voltage systems.

  • Knowledge of codes and standards, to include but not limited to NQA-1, ISA, IBC, IEBC, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and NFPA 780.
  • Experience with supporting safety analyses and hazards evaluations.
  • Experience in the use of SKM software.
  • Essential Job Functions(can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending.

    Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.Work Environment:Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.

    All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.

    If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.

    The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
