**Overview**

**Be part of the nation’s only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.**

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a **_Nuclear Safety Engineer_** and join our team located in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

**Responsibilities**

The successful candidate will work within the Nuclear Safety organization with duties to include: document/procedure preparation and reviews, perform Unreviewed Safety Question Determinations and Screenings, Project Safety Design Evaluations (DOE-STD-1189) and Potential Inadequate in the Safety Analysis (PISA) documents.

Perform High Material at Risk (MAR) evaluations, and necessary document preparations to support the development or changes to the WIPP Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) and Technical Safety Requirement (TSR) documents when necessary.

Requires interaction and coordination with various site organizations, e.g., Engineering, Work Control, Operations, QA, Maintenance, Packaging and Transportation, and Regulatory Environmental Services.

Expectation includes: Addressing Compliance issues from internal and external sources, overviewing internal and external reviews of nuclear safety programs; following corrective actions through completion or resolution, and assuring auditable documentation in maintained.

**Minimum Requirements**

+ Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science or Engineering with five (5) years of professional experience* is required.
+ Professional experience must include two (2) years of job-related experience (e.g., interpreting, creating, evaluating and revising technical documents; addressing compliance-related issues, or implementing critical safety requirements).
+ Three (3) years of WIPP site experience is required.

**This position is included in the Training Implementation Matrix (TIM) therefore alternatives to education and nuclear experience may be reviewed and met in accordance with company policy MP 4.7.

+ Alternatives to Education: (1) Professional engineers license or successful completion of Engineer in Training examination for a baccalaureate or associate degree requirement, (2) Related experience may substitute for education at the rate of six semester credit hours for each year of experience up to a maximum of 60 credit hours, and (3) When combined with experience, completion of technical portions of an engineering, engineering technology, or related science program may substitute for the baccalaureate or associate degree.

Successful completion must be determined by a transcript or certification by an accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education.

Completion of 80 semester credit hours may be substituted for the baccalaureate requirement and 43 semester credit hours for the associate degree (in technical subjects related to the position).

+ Alternatives to Nuclear Requirements: (1) Where course work is related to job assignments, post-secondary education may be substituted.

Formal education must not be allowed to substitute for more than 50 percent of the experience requirement, except as otherwise provided in the “Table 1 Notes” set forth in “APPENDIX 1” of the TIM, and (2) Job-related training in the position sought may qualify as the equivalent to nuclear experience on a one-for-one basis for up to a maximum of two years.

**Preferred Requirements**

+ Broad, experience-based knowledge of WIPP operations and engineering principles, methods and associated regulatory requirements as desired.
+ Knowledge of company practices and policies; use and/or understanding and knowledge of the DSA/TSR is preferred.
+ Five (5) years of experience at a DOE Hazard Category I or II Facility is preferred.
+ Oral communication skills preferred.

Minimum salary $87,312 per year of a larger salary range --the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate’s relevant experience and education.
