Job description

Description

Help Build a Bold, National Movement for Reproductive Freedom

Are you an experienced organizer passionate about using personal stories to drive change?

Do you thrive at building grassroots power and mentoring organizers on the front lines?

Abortion in America is seeking an Organizing Director to lead efforts to engage and mobilize storytellers in states across the country.

This is a rare opportunity to help shape a bold, new initiative from the ground up — leveraging the power of grassroots organizing and personal stories to change minds, build power, and spark action at a pivotal moment for reproductive freedom in the United States.

About Abortion in America

In the wake of Roe v.

Wade’s reversal, Abortion in America is a national initiative amplifying the personal stories of people directly impacted by abortion bans.

We believe storytelling is movement work — research shows that personal narratives can change minds and mobilize communities.

Our work is rooted in three core priorities:

  • Documenting and sharing lived experiences of people whose lives have been affected by abortion bans

  • Supporting and organizing storytellers to lead, speak out, and connect in powerful ways

  • Using research and social analysis to understand what stories resonate and why
  • About The Role:

As Organizing Director, you will design and drive the strategy to engage and mobilize abortion storytellers nationwide.

You’ll oversee organizing efforts in our initial focus states (Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, and Texas) and lay the groundwork for future expansion.

This is a senior-level role suited to a seasoned strategist and mentor who can combine vision, leadership, and hands-on execution.

    Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a national organizing strategy with clear goals, metrics, trainings, and work plans to engage and mobilize abortion storytellers

  • Oversee organizing efforts in focus states and identify new states for future expansion

  • Hire, mentor, and manage state organizers while serving as their point of contact within the national team

  • Support organizers in building trust-based relationships with storytellers and offering meaningful engagement opportunities

  • Lead efforts to identify and onboard new storytellers, maintaining an up-to-date national storyteller database

  • Build partnerships at the state level with reproductive justice organizations, community groups, and unexpected allies to expand reach and deepen impact

  • Elevate standout storytellers for national opportunities, including our speakers’ bureau

  • Collaborate with colleagues, allied organizations, and advisors to ensure organizing strategy reflects a respectful, community-informed approach

  • Lead workshops and trainings at public events, including Abortion in America’s annual storyteller convening

  • Evaluate and report on organizing outcomes to colleagues and stakeholders
  • Who You Are and What You Bring:

  • 3–5 years’ experience leading national and state-level organizing programs as senior staff

  • 5–7 years’ experience managing organizers with a track record of mentorship and leadership development

  • Strong commitment to reproductive justice and abortion access

  • Creative approach to partnership-building and movement strategy

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with discretion and sensitivity

  • Computer proficiency in Google Suite, MS Office, Slack, and similar platforms

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

  • We are a remote-first work culture with regular travel required to focus states and working flexible hours as needed
  • Compensation & Reporting

This is a full-time exempt remote position, with a salary range of $110,000-$130,000.

Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families).

Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plan and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions.

Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits.

Employees will receive 120 hours vacation, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually.

Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year.

Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment with competitive salary and benefits.

The Organizing Director reports to the Director of Partnerships and Program Operations.
