The Communication Studies department is seeking instructors for two communication studies courses for Summer Quarter 2024 (July 1 – August 22) :

  • CMST& 101 is a survey course that covers verbal, nonverbal and listening skills essential to effective living and becoming competent communicators by applying interpersonal, small group, public speaking, and cross-cultural communication theories to a variety of contexts including the workplace, communities, and families.

    This course will be taught in a hybrid format and requires 2 hours per week of in-person teaching on the college campus.
  • CMST& 220 covers building confidence when speaking with others, learning to influence others by critically listening to and crafting organized, informative and persuasive speeches, conducting responsible research on topics appropriate for a specific audience, and using sound reasoning and strong delivery to achieve effective presentation skills.

    This course will be taught in a hybrid format and requires 2 hours per week of in-person teaching on the college campus.

    Faculty at Shoreline will have an array of students from differing programs in their classroom, including professional technical and university transfers.

    Shoreline seeks a candidate that can identify and mitigate the barriers to success that many students face and be passionate about creating an equitable learning environment that supports success for all students .

    Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in communication studiesor related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience teaching, training, or mentoring adults
  •  
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems and other appropriate instructional technology
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of communication studies
  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online
  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
  • Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
  • Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and abilities
  • Conditions of Employment

    Physical Work Environment:
     The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option for some assignments to be completed in an online environment based on program or area needs.

    For remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs.

    For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time.

    Faculty typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.


     
    Terms of Employment & Salary: 
    This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment.

    Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation.

    Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.

    PART-TIME FACULTY POSITIONS
    A part time faculty member becomes eligible for benefits at the beginning of the second consecutive quarter of half time or more employment at one or more Washington state institutions of higher education.

    Spring and fall quarters are considered consecutive quarters for benefits eligibility.

    Half time is determined based on each institution's definition of full time.
    A part time faculty member must qualify each quarter they teach to maintain eligibility.

    Once eligible, part time faculty will be notified of their benefit and retirement options.
