Primary Purpose
To provide instruction or lab instructional support within the veterinarian technician program in accordance with the standards established by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
To support the Veterinary Technician Programs growth as it begins annual enrollment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ Provide instruction for program courses involving lecture only or lecture and laboratory settings in a collegial environment along with full time tenure track faculty members and part-time faculty members.
+ Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling and maintaining necessary resources with the aid of a laboratory assistant or other faculty member
+ Remain current in the field of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinary Technician Education through a variety of professional activities and by staying current on State Licensure.
+ Demonstrate a potential for excellent classroom and lab instruction using the provided curriculum.
Support and guidance will be provided by the Program Director and Full-Time Faculty.
+ Maintain grade, records of completion of essential skills completed by students, inputting data or otherwise retaining information regarding students and their progress in meeting instructional goals utilizing Canvas learning management software and other resources provided.
+ Hold at least one scheduled office hour per class per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
+ Perform other essential job functions as assigned.
Department Specific
+ Provide instruction, guidance, and assessment in lecture +/- laboratory settings within the Veterinary Technician Program.
This position will include didactic instruction, in the classroom.
Courses that may be taught include, but are not limited to, Animal Hospital and Office Procedures, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Radiation Safety, Veterinary Microbiology, Parasitology and Pathology, Exotic and Lab Animal, Pharmaceutical Math, Diagnostic Imaging and Animal Nutrition.
Part time instruction requires approximately 25 contact hours per month.
This a cohort program with up to 24 students enrolled at the beginning of each Fall Term.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
+ Thorough knowledge in the field of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinary Technician Training and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
+ Desire to advocate for all species and work with the species referenced in the classwork or lab (large, small, exotics, lab, birds, etc.).
+ Knowledge of and vision of the Certified Veterinary Technician’s role in the veterinary profession.
+ Experience working with Certified Veterinary Technicians in a clinical, research, and/or academic setting.
+ Visual ability, corrected, to enable instructors to observe, direct, and supervise students in laboratory situations.
+ Ability to effectively use Microsoft platform desktop computer and various software including Microsoft Office and Outlook, with potential to learn Canvas learning management system.
+ Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.
+ Ability to provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
+ Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students, faculty and staff and the willingness to work as a member of a team.
+ Excellent oral, written and electronic communication skills.
+ Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature.
+ Ability to work with faculty and other COCC staffs at all levels.
+ Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required.
Ergonomic Requirements
Work is performed in a classroom, laboratory, and office environment using computers, white boards, projectors, veterinary equipment, and other basic office equipment.
The employee is regularly required use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations.
Must be able to kneel, stoop, crawl, and crouch.
Physical movements may involve lifting objects up to 40lbs.

Minimum Requirements
+ Current Oregon License as a Veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board (by the time of hire).
+ Veterinary Technician applicants must have an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Technician from an accredited institution, have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam ( VTNE ) and be a credentialed Veterinary Technician.
+ Minimum of 1 year of experience working as a licensed Veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician with the handling and management of animals.

Preferred Qualifications
+ Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level and current knowledge of educational theory and methodology.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Science or Education
+ Demonstrated ability to work with community Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians.
+ Knowledge of teaching and instruction of adult learners, various audiences and group dynamics.
+ Experience in curriculum development at the post-secondary levels.
+ Familiarity with and ability to operate or oversee the operation of audio-visual equipment, including overhead projectors, film, sound systems, video, television, interactive video and audio equipment including computer controlled mixed media presentations.
