Job description

Position Summary

The Coding Competition Student Assistant will work closely with Computer Science faculty to help organize coding competition events for students during the academic year.

Responsibilities may include developing or reviewing problems, creating content for the competition platform, and managing questions from participants.

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in strengthening their computer programming skills, supporting others in their learning, and helping build community.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Pay rate: $19.55/hour - $25.29/hour

The salary information shown above is a general guideline only.

The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience, as well as market and business considerations.

Typically, new hire starts no higher than $19.55/hour based on Bellevue College hourly salary schedule.

The successful candidate is expected to work 5 hours per week over a 2-3 week period leading up to the event.

Additionally, availability is required on competition day from 9 AM to 5 PM.

This position is typically assigned on an as-needed basis each quarter, with no expectation of continued employment beyond the current appointment.

The temporary hourly employment is limited to the earlier of 1,050 hours or 12 consecutive months beginning from the original date of hire.

Per WAC 357-04-045, following 1,050 hours or 12 consecutive months, an individual is not eligible for re-employment at Bellevue College in another temporary part-time hourly position.

Temporary hourly employees who work more than three hundred fifty (350) hours in a twelve consecutive month period may be subject to provisions of one the collective bargaining agreements covering Classified employees at Bellevue College.

This position is expected to NOT be eligible for benefits because eligibility is limited only to employees working at least an average of 80 hours in eligible employment for more than 6 consecutive months and at least 8 hours a month.

About the Department

The Computer Science department is compromised of the Computer Science Transfer and the 4-year Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree program.

Bellevue College is the first community and technical college in Washington State to offer a traditional, four-year Bachelor of Science degree.

The Computer Science program has a proven track record of preparing students for a career in computer science through individualized support, relevant curriculum, and a focus on student job placement after graduation.

Essential Functions
  • Design engaging and appropriately challenging coding problems, including clear problem statements, input/output specifications, and test cases that meet competition standards.
  • Develop clear, user-friendly content for the competition platform and website.
  • Create short instructional videos to help participants navigate and use the platform effectively.
  • Help maintain and update platform documentation in collaboration with the team.
  • Monitor the designated Discord channel and respond promptly to participant questions.
  • Provide accurate, supportive answers and escalate complex issues when needed.
  • Work with fellow student assistants to ensure smooth communication and resolution of participant concerns.
  • Foster a positive and welcoming atmosphere within the competition community.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrolled in the BS in Computer Science program at Bellevue College.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, with demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated through coursework, projects, or professional/student experiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and manage multiple tasks efficiently, demonstrated through coursework, projects, or prior experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in organizing or participating in coding competitions.

    At the time of hire, BC student must:
  • Be in good standing with Student Conduct

    While in the position, students must:
  • Maintain student status (enrolled in academic credits) at Bellevue College (except Summer).
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and not fall below a 2.5 quarterly GPA for more than one consecutive quarter.
  • Remain in good standing with Student Conduct.
