Job Description
Academic Achievement Center Peer Tutors, Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL) Leaders, and Undergraduate Writing Commons Tutors provide learning support to undergraduate students in one-hour sessions.
Peer Tutors meet with students in online Teams meetings and in-person at various locations on the Athens and regional campuses.
Tutors engage students in learning activities such as discussing class material and test questions, offering information about learning strategies, and fostering a positive learning environment.
PAL Leaders facilitate weekly review sessions for students taking historically difficult courses.
During PAL sessions, PAL Leaders facilitate discussion of important course concepts, help students develop strategies for studying, and teach participants how to become independent learners.
In addition to facilitating weekly review sessions, PAL Leader responsibilities include attending class, communicating with the professor, and planning review sessions.
Responsibilities: Complete the required 10 hours of paid training.
Attend all scheduled tutoring or PAL sessions.
Be punctual, begin all sessions promptly, use time for academic tasks, and focus on the student’s needs.
Create a positive learning environment and encourage independent learning by helping students identify problem areas and giving them opportunities to practice and build knowledge.
Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the FERPA compliance statement.
Keep up-to-date with appointments using the TracCloud scheduling software.
Check email and Teams to remain informed of activity at the AAC.
Submit accurate time sheets and enter hours in Workforce in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum cumulative GPA of Grade of “B” or higher in the courses you wish to tutor or work as a PAL Leader.
Must have completed at least one semester undergraduate of college-level coursework at Ohio University.
Must be available to work 6 – 12 hours every week for the entire semester.
Preferred Qualifications Previous tutoring or teaching experience.
Currently enrolled at Ohio University.
Qualified to tutor or lead PAL sessions for 100-200-level courses in one or more academic subject areas.
