Job description

UPMC Williamsport is hiring a casual (per diem) phlebotomist, inpatient!

Casual Requirements:

  • Minimum Time Worked:16 hours per pay periodAt least 2 weekend shifts per month
  • Scheduling:Shifts must be scheduled in advance for six-week blocks
  • Flexibility: Hours and shifts vary as scheduled:Early morning shifts (4am)Second shifts (3pm-1am)Minimum requirements are subject to change based on departmental needs
  • Responsibilities:

  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Follow proper patient identification procedures to procure appropriate blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick.

    Instruct patients on collection procedures for laboratory specimens they obtain themselves, and collect samples other than blood as required.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and accepting appropriate authority.
  • Perform specimen collection at off-site locations and transport specimens from on- and off-site collection areas to the appropriate section of the laboratory following established safety procedures.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety (including hand hygiene techniques and proper isolation precautions), compliance, and personnel policies.
  • Perform related clerical duties as required, utilizing various computer functions to accurately enter demographic information into the information system(s), enter test orders, receive, cancel, charge, and credit tests, while ensuring adequacy of patient information and sample identity.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as applicable and assigned.
  • Inform technical staff, supervisory personnel, and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Perform arterial puncture following strict collection and post-collection guidelines as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for assigned functions, using materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months of experience performing phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information system experience is preferred.
  • Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
