About the Position:
This position is dedicated to facilitating laboratory specimen center operations and the collection of human blood specimens.
Responsibilities include obtaining high-quality blood samples via phlebotomy, transporting other specimen types collected by the patient team staff, and ensuring accurate processing and accessioning of specimens within designated deadlines for pick-up.
This position also conducts Laboratory Operations Support and Administrative Functions.
Duties include:
Specimen Collection:
+ Collect quality blood specimens from mentally ill patients and facility staff through venipuncture and capillary finger sticks with minimal to no trauma to the draw site during morning rounds (medical treatment rooms, patient rooms, seclusion rooms, etc.), using proper phlebotomy techniques and infection control practices.
+ Utilize critical thinking and sound judgment and understand relevant processes to troubleshoot challenges, guaranteeing specimen integrity and the dependability of laboratory outcomes.
This involves resolving issues that may arise, understanding the interplay between different procedures, and ensuring optimal conditions for accurate results.
+ Apply knowledge and expertise to educate patient team staff on proper specimen collection and storage conditions when necessary.
+ Collaborate with fellow laboratory staff to distribute tasks effectively, address challenges, and exchange information.
This teamwork approach fosters high-quality patient care and enhances the efficiency and precision of phlebotomy and specimen processing procedures.
+ Maintain awareness of environmental safety hazards, including those related to working with mentally ill patients.
Specimen Processing/Data Entry/ Lab Result Follow-Up:
+ Independently prepares specimens for dispatch to the referral laboratory by correctly processing them in accordance with the criteria specified by the referral laboratory.
This entails tasks such as centrifuging, separating serum/plasma from the blood sample, completing requisitions, organizing, packaging, and correctly storing specimens, as well as adhering to carrier pick-up schedules and/or arranging specialized transport services as needed.
+ Effectively utilize and navigate various reporting systems, including Quest Quanum, Behavioral Electronic Health Record (BEHR), third-party referral laboratory systems, as well as hardcopy paper systems.
This involves generating necessary labels, requests, reports, etc., to ensure proper collection, processing, and identification of specimens.
Additionally, these systems are utilized to receive and report final laboratory results accurately and for managing special events such as critical values, ensuring seamless coordination and communication throughout the process.
+ Conducts precise and meticulous data entry into laboratory systems to generate necessary service codes, specimen processing instructions, accessioning information, specimen labels, packing slips, and other essential items required for specimen collection, processing, accessioning, tracking, and related tasks.
+ Generates packing lists for send-out testing and hospital laboratory tracking.
+ Verifies accurate entry of patient information and test data into the electronic health record (EHR), guaranteeing that precise information is accessible to all relevant stakeholders, including billing, tracking, and patient accounts departments.
+ Exercises basic judgment and expertise in determining proper specimen processing technique and requests guidance and assistance when confronted with complex, unusual, and/or unfamiliar situations.
+ Effectively and precisely handles hardcopy lab reports, ensuring they are processed efficiently and distributed to the relevant parties, such as infection preventionists, in a timely manner.
Laboratory Operations & Admin Support:
+ Perform proper cleaning procedures after each shift.
+ Perform regular deeper cleaning processes (weekly, monthly, etc.).
+ Check and maintain inventory in the phlebotomist draw kit to ensure that all supplies are within expiration dates and stocked for rounds.
+ Assists with tracking reports to ensure result receipt, as needed.
+ Assists with maintaining hospital laboratory inventory and replenishing supplies (e.g. collection tubes, needles, gloves, labels for label printers, etc.).
+ Assists with maintaining necessary log entries (e.g. temperatures, etc.).
+ Assists with checking hospital laboratory inventory for low quantities and expiration dates and placing orders with reference laboratory or Central Medical Supply, as needed.
+ Maintain supplies needed for operations such as refilling the paper drawers, refilling the label printers, replacing printer ink, etc., and requesting supplies from the work unit administrative assistant when needed.
+ Answer phones, and respond to visitors at internal and external doors, etc.
+ Assists the Medical Services Unit in completing clinical and administrative tasks for all programs.
+ Provides backup to clinic staff to accomplish core Medical Services work unit responsibilities.
This includes primary coverage of other work unit staff duties (e.g., laboratory staff, sterile processing/central medical supply staff, other support staff) as needed to meet work unit and hospital demands.
+ Assists Sterile Processing / Central Medical Supply with maintaining inventory, ordering, stocking, distributing supplies to the teams, and processing instruments.
+ Maintaining a clean and professional appearance of the Medical Services area(s).
+ Picking up and dropping off mail.
Other Duties as Assigned:
+ Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of the work unit

Two (2) years of relevant experience in Phlebotomy.
OR
Education and Experience:
A combination of related education and/or relevant experience in an occupation
related to the work assigned to this position equal to two (2) years
Special Qualifications:
Phlebotomy Certification- ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or AMT (American Medical Technologist) or ASPT (American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians Phlebotomy certification) or suitable certification per Agency discretion

Conditions of Employment:
The successful candidate in this position must be willing and available to submit to the following conditions:
+ Must have Phlebotomy certification
+ Must be 21 years of age or older
+ Eligible to be able to be on-call
+ Must be able to work shift: this position must be able to work early morning shifts
+ Full Background - Name check, TRAILS, Drug Screen and Fingerprinting
+ Regular exposure to potentially infectious material/blood-borne pathogens.
+ Essential Services Designation-required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare.
+ Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation as to why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position.
Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS
