Urgent! Postdoctoral Fellow Job Opening In San Francisco Bay Area – Now Hiring Berkeley Lab

Job description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s () Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics () Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team to work in the matrixed into the in support of ALS accelerator systems.

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar with expertise in Accelerator Physics or Computer Science, with an emphasis on Machine Learning.

The position requires engagement in pioneering research at the crossroads of machine learning and accelerator physics, aimed at improving the performance and capabilities of our light source facility.

In this exciting role, you will study beam-based diagnostics to identify machine errors and optimize performance, as well as explore and develop advanced control methods for injectors and storage rings.

Additionally, the position requires using ML methods to analyze operational data, predict component failures, and enhance maintenance schedules.

Modern complex accelerators at large-scale scientific user facilities face increasing challenges as new machines push the boundaries of technology in the pursuit of higher performance.

Working with a team of accelerator physicists and engineers, the position requires tackling these challenges by applying machine learning techniques to accelerator tuning and control.

Alongside the cutting-edge research facilities at ALS, one of the world’s leading synchrotron light sources, the candidate will have access to the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), including the Perlmutter GPU cluster.

This access will provide outstanding computational resources for data analysis, simulation, and the development of advanced machine learning algorithms.

What You Will Do:

  • Conduct pioneering research in the development and application of machine learning algorithms for accelerator physics.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to address complex challenges in accelerator design, optimization, and operation.
  • Support the commissioning of the ALS accelerator upgrade, contributing to the integration and optimization of new subsystems and technologies.
  • Communicate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and seminars.
  • What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Accelerator Physics, or a related field, awarded within the last 5 years.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively write scientific reports and papers, present research findings at conferences and seminars, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Desired Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with particle accelerators, or experience with computational aspects of accelerator modeling and control
  • Demonstrated theoretical and practical expertise in machine learning, particularly but not limited to deep learning techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and deploying machine learning models in interdisciplinary research settings.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience in using machine learning libraries and frameworks.
  • Experience with high performance computing.
  • Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience.

Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $ 5,374 - $7,510 and is expected to start at $6,542 or above.

Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check.

Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position.
