Position Description: We are seeking an
Engineering Designer/Drafter to join our team in Roanoke, VA.
This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy combining technical expertise with problem-solving to deliver safe, cost-effective, and reliable facility designs for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.
As an Engineering Designer/Drafter, you will gain hands-on experience with design software, construction practices, and utility standards while supporting projects that directly impact safety, efficiency, and service reliability.
This position offers opportunities to collaborate with cross-functional teams, build client relationships, and grow under the mentorship of experienced engineers and project leaders.
Key Responsibilities: - Ensure strict adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
- Apply codes, regulations, and company/client standards to design projects.
- Prepare project/job packages including material lists, requisitions, labor estimates, and detailed drawings.
- Develop proficiency in design software and work management tools.
- Conduct site visits safely and effectively, interacting with field/construction personnel.
- Evaluate electrical distribution equipment loading, such as transformers and fusing.
- Learn utility construction practices across public right-of-way (ROW) and private property.
- Communicate project status to meet client expectations and deadlines.
- Maintain accurate and organized records, files, and documentation.
- Build positive relationships with internal teams, external clients, and construction crews.
- Support storm restoration activities as needed (Driver, Wire Down Sitter, or Clerk).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Education: - Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work across diverse teams and backgrounds.
- Self-motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented with strong technical aptitude.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle (mileage reimbursement may apply).
- Willingness to learn, grow, and take direction from senior staff and mentors.
