Job description

The Wake County Environmental Services Division of Water Quality educates the public, issues environmental permits, enforces environmental rules and regulations to protect soil and water resources; and leads initiatives on water and environmental sustainability throughout the County.

The Division functions at a nationally recognized level and accomplishes its tasks through robust and customer-centric programs in watershed management and water resources.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • Four years of experience in environmental health, environmental planning, inspections or engineering
  • North Carolina Professional Engineer’s (PE) License upon hire or the ability to obtain through comity; Valid Driver's License and safe driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

  • Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Master's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field
  • Registered Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • Certified Professional in Erosion & Sediment Control (CPESC)
  • Certified Professional in Stormwater Quality (CPSWQ)
  • Five years of experience as a Civil/Environmental Engineer applying engineering principles to sedimentation & erosion control, stormwater management, and plan review

  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats, explaining technical specifications to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to evaluate peer projects, identify possible technical deficiencies among staff or areas of emerging concern and provide appropriate training materials/resources
  • Excellent ability to identify measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, to maintain high-quality and competitive core services
  • Solid knowledge of rules, design principles and methods to control sedimentation and erosion and mitigate stormwater runoff
  • Knowledge of Green Stormwater Infrastructure principles and applications, with the ability to advance innovative stormwater management and nature-based solutions with stakeholders
