Job description

What You Will DoWeapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q Division) provides systems engineering and program management to develop and field qualified engineering solutions to improve the safety, reliability, and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile throughout the weapon life cycle.

Q Division is responsible for leadership of activities in new LANL weapons programs as well as life extension and alteration projects.The Advanced System Development Group (Q-18) is responsible for Systems and Design Engineering of Future Weapons Systems up to phase 3/6.3 with emphasis on improved performance, safety, producibility, and agility of the future stockpile, Interagency Peer Reviews (IPRs) of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Systems, and Future System and System Agnostic Design and System Engineering support.This R&D Engineer 4 position will play a key role in leading two Interlaboratory Peer Reviews of LLNL systems.

As the Principal Engineer for two IPRs, you will be responsible for working with Q-18 Management and the IPR Program Manager to interact across Design Agencies (DAs) and the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) to properly plan and budget for the IPR, address and report on IPR taskings, lead the LANL cross-functional team in conducting technical reviews of design, coordinate IPR reports, and communicate with all levels of management at LANL to ensure effective messaging to our DA partners and NNSA.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:Nuclear Weapons Systems Experience: A minimum of 5 years of nuclear weapons experience as well as a general understanding of all aspects of nuclear weapons, including but not limited to: Primary and Secondary Physics, Engineering Analysis, Safety, Normal, Abnormal, and Hostile Environments, GTS, and System Interfaces.Technical Leadership: Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated expertise in leading a complex, cross-functional team.

Demonstrated ability to pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results.

Communication: Strong written and verbal communication.

Demonstrated ability to be primary author of reports and presentations that deliver strong technical content.

Demonstrated ability to craft and deliver important messaging to all levels internal and external to LANL.Mentoring: Demonstrated leadership in mentoring and training technical staff.Safety and Security: Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees.

Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task.

Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications: Although not required, any number or combination of the following skills may make an applicant for this position more appealing to the hiring committee:

  • 10+ years of experience and advanced knowledge of nuclear weapon design, development, qualification, certification, assembly/production, and/or surveillance
  • Recent experience on a nuclear weapons modernization program
  • Direct and in-depth experience with specific aspects of nuclear weapon design, development, and/or analysis.

  • Experience working with the LANL Weapons Engineering and Weapons Physics organizations
  • Experience as a Derivative Classifier (DC)
  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM.

    All work locations are at the discretion of management.Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.

    If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.

    The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
