Job description

The Emerson Test & Measurement/National Instruments (NI) Transportation Business Unit Customer Centric Solutions Team is seeking to hire an experienced Principal Systems Design Engineer (Electrical) to work on custom solution projects that enable the sale of standard NI products.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to work with customers, sales personnel, engineering teams, partners, and contract manufacturers to define, document, design, deploy and sustain NI systems tailored to meet specific customer requirements for large scale turnkey engineering solutions.

The ideal candidate has experience and knowledge regarding NI products and system level design.

In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:

This is a multi-functional role dealing with diverse engineering needs, including the ability to gather requirements, generate specification documents, and work with integration partners, contract manufacturers and internal personnel to design, deploy and sustain custom test and validation solutions worldwide.

This is a high visibility role within NI requiring daily interaction with NI customers, partners, NI Sales Teams, NI Engineering Teams, and Executive Management.

The role will include: 

  • Interacting with a wide variety of NI customers, NI staff, external partners and suppliers in support of designing, implementing and sustaining of custom solutions 
  • Generating requirements documents, statements of work and Bills of Materials 
  • Specifying and defining system configurations and electrical/electronic designs as part of systems and solutions
  • Prototyping, testing, and deploying turnkey automated solutions in the Automotive industry
  • Defining and implementing project plans, managing milestones and holding reviews to ensure systems meet requirements and readiness for deployment 
  • Directing support personnel, managing project technical deliverables, guiding technical decisions and driving field found issues to resolution 
  • Traveling as needed (possibly up to %) domestically and abroad in support of project objectives

    Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics or Electronics Engineering Technology 
  • Minimum of years relevant industry experience in a Hardware Systems Design Role or a Test Engineering Design Role, including leadership in product and/or test system design and development
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering, electronics & computer architectures
  • Understanding of high-level programming languages (LabVIEW, TestStand, C/C++/C)
  • Demonstrated understanding of the following concepts and principles: Appropriate selection of instrumentation and equipment to meet system requirements Understanding of schematics, wiring diagrams, and signal routing Measurement methodologies and sources of measurement error
  • Integration of hardware and software 
  • Bill of Materials creation and review for Manufacturing
  • Proficiency with CAD and PCB design tools and experience in designing custom components for test systems
  • Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:
  • Knowledge in Component Supplier Selection 
  • Knowledge in Compliance Certifications (CE, UL, TUV, Etc.) 
  • Hands on use of NI Hardware Platforms and Instruments 
  • Hands on use of NI LabVIEW and Test Stand 
  • SolidWorks Electrical with D plugin
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and internal Manufacturing groups
