Job description

Job Purpose and Primary Objectives:
Benchmark Space Systems is seeking a Propellant Chemist to join our team.

This role will be responsible for conducting chemical and physical laboratory tests to qualitatively and quantitatively analyse materials, propellants, and processes used in spacecraft propulsion systems.

This role works closely with the Propulsion Development, Operations and Engineering teams.

This role is on-site at our Pleasanton, California location.

Measurements of Success/Primary Job Responsibilities:
At its core, Benchmark is an entrepreneurial, fast paced organization.

In this environment, we need all employees to problem solve, not be afraid to ask questions, and be able to work with and help colleagues in different departments and positions by digging in and working on other tasks as needed/assigned depending on business needs.

With that said, there are primary job responsibilities and measurements of success for this position, which are:

Test responsibilities:


+ Develop and/or conduct programs of sampling and analysis to maintain quality standards of incoming chemicals.

+ Set up chemical experiments, tests, and analysis using standard analytical chemistry equipment.

+ Perform material compatibility studies with various propellants, propulsion system materials, and subcomponents.

+ Design or fabricate experimental apparatus to develop new capabilities and processes.

+ Prepare data acquisition systems for tests.

+ Conduct cleanliness verification tests on test equipment and propulsion system hardware.


Chemical Maintenance responsibilities:


+ Prepare chemical solutions and standards.

+ Maintain, clean, and repair laboratory instruments and equipment.

+ Provide chemical support to technicians and engineers.

+ Order and inventory materials to maintain supplies.

+ Sourcing equipment, materials, and tools.


Chemical Handling and Safety:


+ Ensure PPE, equipment and facilities are well-stocked, clean, and safe.

+ Direct, monitor, and train other workers who are handling chemicals.

+ Manage proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemical waste.

+ Generate and update safety documentation.


Analysis and Documentation:


+ Prepare test plans, test matrices, and test reports.

+ Compile and interpret results of tests and analyses.

+ Create analytical tools and calculators to optimize and automate analysis of experimental results.

Education and/or Experience:

+ Bachelor's in chemical engineering or related field.



+ 2+ years of experience with propulsion chemistry.

+ A passion for space technology and chemistry and emerging ecosystems in and around current and future space activities.

+ Good written and verbal communication with engineers, vendors, technicians and scientists.

+ U.S. Person required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
What you bring to the position, or have the ability to swiftly learn and be successful in:


+ Experience using and maintaining analytical chemistry instruments and apparatus such as vacuum filtration, titration, densitometers, spectroscopy, and refractometers.

+ Chemical handling, including knowledge of acids, alkalis, solvents, oxidizers and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.

+ Programming proficiency with National Instruments or other data acquisition systems is preferable.

+ Organization of equipment, glassware, chemicals and other chemical inventory.

+ Be/become proficient in: Microsoft Suite as well as possess the ability, agility, and can-do attitude to work in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced and matrixed cross-functional environment.
