Job Title: Prototype Machinist (All Levels)

Location: Troy, AL

Classification: Non-Exempt

Grade: Hourly 

Department: Product Engineering

Reports To: Lead Prototype Machinist

Date: September 26, 2025

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

The Prototype Machinist position requires a highly motivated individual with experience working in a CNC machining or prototype/job shop machining environment.

Candidate must have basic understanding of milling, turning, and grinding, with the ability to understand blueprints and GD&T.

Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in general machining with Haas and Makino Controls.

Mastercam experience is preferred.

In lieu of 3 years of experience, candidates with a technical degree in machining will also be considered.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Under limited supervision, fabricates and modifies novel firearm parts, fixtures, and jigs to drawing specifications.

  • Must be able to work from CAD models, engineering drawings, sketches, or other written or oral instructions as well as tool design drawings.

  • Create 3,4, and 5 axis CNC programs using Mastercam.

  • Maintain Tooling, Fixturing, Materials, CNC programs in a systematic way to ensure proper execution of processes.

  • Fabricate (and potentially develop) tooling, fixtures to support machining and development of prototype parts and reworking parts.

  • Develop and fabricate prototype tooling for Engineering lab assembly process for low volume builds.

  • Make program changes without supervision.

  • Assures work areas are organized, clean and hazard free; implements 5S practices.

  • Make accurate, independent decisions regarding equipment condition and product quality.

  • Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and manufacturing quality standards.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and functional working environment.

  • Effectively communicate and notify manager when there are discrepancies.

  • Complete all other duties as assigned by manager.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interpret technical prints (GD&T).

  • Must have knowledge of CNC machine “G-Code” and troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience maintaining and changing tools.

  • Experience determining offsets and adjusting accordingly.

  • Working knowledge of measuring equipment (calipers, micrometers, height stand).

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Understanding of safety and compliance standards.

  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation and record-keeping skills.

  • EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

    Required: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • 3 years of CNC experience required 
  • Preferred: 

  • 6+ years of CNC experience
  • 2+ years of Mastercam experience
  • Manual machining experience
  • Vocational/Technical Degree
  • Lean manufacturing experience 
  • Wire EDM experience
  • Die sinker EDM experience
  • Mastercam 3D and multi-axis programming experience
  • Experience with advanced GD&T 
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

    TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

    Travel will normally be less than 5% (training, equipment development, satellite facility support) to 0%.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Must have excellent communication skills; reading, writing and listening.

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints.

    Ability write and read spreadsheets.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.

    Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    COMPUTER SKILLS

    Knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word using MS Windows platform.

    MS PowerPoint and MS Access experience a plus.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

    Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES

    Attendance is an essential job requirement defined as having regular, consistent, reliable, punctual and predictable attendance including the ability to work regular hours and shifts, overtime before and after shifts and on weekends.

    Ability to work as part of a team, including all related departments/plants or independently as required to achieve internal and external customer satisfaction.
