Position Summary Information

Summary The Rapid Prototyping and Electronics Lab Technician plays a critical role in supporting the teaching, research, and design efforts within the College of Engineering.

This position oversees the operations of the Rapid Prototyping Lab (RPL), maintains and repairs lab electronics and equipment, supervises student workers, and ensures safe, efficient, and timely support for engineering faculty and students.

The technician is also responsible for managing lab consumables, supporting club and outreach activities, and facilitating special projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned.
  • Supervise day-to-day operations of the Rapid Prototyping Lab (RPL), including managing student workers, establishing policy and procedure, and coordinating print/cut jobs.

  • Maintain and update the RPL’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS) book and ensure compliance with chemical inventory and hazardous waste regulations, including the proper storage, record, and disposal of lab materials, including hazardous waste.

  • Coordinate with relevant campus partners for the scheduling of hazardous waste disposal collection for the COE, bi-annually.

  • Prepare ECE and general engineering lab kits before each semester, including but not limited to: replenishing consumables, testing and sorting cables & ensuring digital multimeter (DMM) functionality.

  • Monitor and replenish RPL and electronics lab consumables, including but not limited to: 3D filament and resin, nitrile gloves and blue shop towels, electronic components (resistors, diodes, op-amps, ICs, etc.), and patch cables and plastic parts bags

  • Empty battery collection points at semester’s end, sort collected batteries, and coordinate recycling through campus facilities EHS.

  • Maintain a clean and organized lab environment, including organized storage of spare and recycled electronic components for future use.

  • Maintain and perform routine servicing of RPL 3D printers and assist in the upkeep of 3D printers across other departments.

  • Maintain and troubleshoot electronic test and lab equipment such as, but not limited to: Digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, and DC power supplies.

  • Supervise student workers responsible for ECE lab kit maintenance and organization.

  • Identify and arrange repair of malfunctioning equipment, including factory servicing and coordination with purchasing and shipping departments.

  • Maintain and repair various types of department-owned lab and shop equipment—ranging from small electronics to CNC and lab scales.

  • Support faculty in the installation, calibration, and testing of new lab and research equipment.

  • Track and manage lab equipment inventory using the Asset Tracking System: Log new and existing items, monitor internal/external loans, and generating reports for accreditation and course planning.

  • Develop, update and train users in the safe and effective use of RPL equipment, including 3D printers and laser cutters.

  • Provide technical support to students and faculty for design, prototyping, and research projects involving electronic systems and devices.

  • Collaborate with the COE Staff to support hardware and software needs for engineering courses and student projects.

  • Assist faculty with ordering specialized components and lab materials needed for instruction or research.

  • Support student clubs, departmental events, and outreach programs by fabricating custom items such as awards, trophies, and giveaway trinkets.

  • Coordinate special projects that involve RPL capabilities, ensuring timely design, production, and delivery.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities This position could be responsible for assigning work and/or giving direction to part-time Student Workers, in order to complete work assignments.

  • Experience with sensors, motors, and/or mechanical machines will be an asset.

  • Ability to make administrative and procedural decisions and judgments on sensitive, confidential issues.

  • A thorough knowledge of: Business English and arithmetic; general office methods, procedures and practices.

  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.

  • Ability to use independent judgment, and to manage and impart confidential information.

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

  • Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.

  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit; and requires sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate computer keyboard or other office equipment.

    Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers; and speaking and hearing ability sufficient to communicate in person or over the phone.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

    Education and/or Experience Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; and six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
