Job description

We are currently hiring a R&D Sensory Scientist in Boston, MA.

*A Hybrid position at Boston Beer requires that our coworkers reside within commuting distance to be onsite 3 days a week 


The Sensory Scientist I will collect information about the attributes that amplifies the consumer’s love of profiles, and to use this information to help guide the development of the highest quality and the most enjoyable products.

Doing this through excellent execution of consumer testing and a keen understanding of panel training.

This person will help guide new Product Development with organoleptic learnings, and contribute to the reporting of consumer data.

Scientific focus, an attention to detail, prioritization and project management skills are essential.


What You'll Brew: 

  • Conduct consumer testing – utilizing Sensory methods, Sensory tools and statistical evaluation to contribute to results that help to guide R&D projects 
  • Analyze and interpret fundamental sensory data, including generating statistical results and corresponding figures
  • Synthesize key learnings from sensory data and communicate them to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with other sensory professionals to design, build, and edit consumer testing tools using established best practices.

  • Develop and lead sensory panels, including assessing panel sensitivity, tracking panelist performance and attendance, providing performance feedback, screening new panelists for taste and odor acuity, and maintaining panelist database by adding new panelists
  • Coordinate between Sensory teams the validation and smooth transition of products from R&D to Production– including creating profiles and a training program to improve transition to the Breweries
  • Conduct regular events and tests to refresh current panelists on profiles and introduce new products 
  • Conduct the assessment and validation of new products 
  • Staying current with literature and information about sensory evaluation & participating/contributing to the team culture around best practice sharing & implementation 
  • Promotes high product quality sensorial achievements within a professional work environment
  • What Ingredients You'll Bring: 


    Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field 
  • OR BS Degree in Sensory Science, Food Science, Statistics, Psychology or another related field with 3 years of experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in sensory analysis a plus (graduate school counts!)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications required (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Report writing experience
  • travel up to 10%
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Panel training experience 
  • Experience conducting consumer testing
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis (xlstat a plus) 
  • Skills:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills 
  • Proven success multi-tasking in a fast paced environment 
  • High degree of ownership and professional commitment 
  • Working Knowledge of Compusense, Red Jade, SIMS or other sensory software 
  • Level: 7


    At the Boston Beer Company and in accordance with pay transparency laws, we are open about our salary ranges.

    For this role, the salary range is between $59,500 and $106,000.

    However, it’s important to note that where the person hired starts in this range is dependent on their related experience, skillset and location.

    Additionally, this position qualifies for a discretionary annual bonus based on company and individual performance, and certain sales roles might include a car allowance.
