Job Summary:

A Recreation Programmer plans, organizes, and promotes large and small scale specialized city-wide recreational programs or special events.

Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior.

Employees in this class work a conventional work week which may include evening and weekend hours.

Work is performed mainly in an office where there are no uncomfortable working conditions.

Work requires minimal physical exertion.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

AND 

Experience: Have two years of experience in planning, organizing and evaluating recreation programs or special events or in overseeing the operations of a recreational activity.

OR 

Equivalency Notes:

Six months of additional experience in planning, organizing and evaluating the recreation program of a center or special event or in overseeing the operation of a City-wide recreational activity may be substituted for each year of the education requirement.

A master's degree in recreation, physical education or a related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.

Licenses, Registrations, and Certificates:

Some positions in this class requires a Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or equivalent out-of-state-driver’s license acceptable to the office of Risk Management.

  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of recreation program development and successful event production.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of evaluating the effectiveness of a recreation program and special events.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of promoting recreation activities.
  • Knowledge of the methods of developing and conducting training programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement a recreation program in a specialized area.
  • Ability to plan and organize recreation activity schedules.
  • Ability to organize large groups of people.
  • Ability to develop and ensure compliance with organizational rules and regulations.
  • Ability to recruit, train and assign and review the work of others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the community, program participants and professional associations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage logistics, equipment needs, scheduling and communications of events.
  • Ability to create long-term and short-term plans, including setting targets for milestones and adhering to deadlines.
  • Background Check

    Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

    Probation 

    All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.

    Eligibility 

    Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months.

    The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

    Education Accreditation 

    Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution.

    Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency.

    Selection Process 

    All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination.

    The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity.

    It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application.

    Qualified candidates will not be listed in rank order.

    Examination Process 

    Applicants must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the minimum qualifications for this recruitment.

    Successful applicants will be placed on the employment certified eligible list for at least six months.

    The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position.

    You may be required to complete supplemental questions to further examine specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities of the position.

    Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.
