The Cancer Institute/Cancer Prevention and Control at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Remote) Community Health Extender (Program Coordinator) for Eastern Region of West Virginia.

About the Opportunity

This position participates in and contributes to the mission, vision, and strategic plan of WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) and Department of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC).

The position works in conjunction with the staff, faculty, and the community to organize and implement efforts related to community outreach and engagement, navigation, and research in cancer control.

This includes establishing, maintaining and cultivating positive long-term relationships with community partners, coordinating and implementing community cancer prevention and risk reduction education and cancer screening programs, and assisting with building capacity for community research.

The Department of CPC serves all of West Virginia and this position is remotely based within a designated multi-county region of the state and will require frequent travel throughout the state.

Work effort enhances state, regional, and national partnerships, delivery of service, community engagement, and WVUCI priorities.

This is a remote position, requiring attending meetings and training at the CPC office on campus at least one day per month and sometimes more.

An on-campus work station is provided for those times.

This position will support the following counties in West Virginia: Berkeley, Grant, Jefferson, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral, Morgan, Pendleton, Preston, Tucker, and Garrett County, MD.

Frequent travel will be required to these areas.

What You'll Do

Identifies, develops, and maintains partnerships with strategic stakeholders, community, and professional partners, and various community-based organizations throughout West Virginia and the Appalachian region.
• Collaborates with internal and external partners to build capacity to address cancer burden; including assisting with community needs assessments, attending and coordinating community meetings, and providing bidirectional communication.
• Conducts, in partnership, at least two monthly community focused cancer control activities in the assigned region.
• Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of community outreach and engagement plans for the assigned region.

Includes dissemination of public/patient educational materials, outreach and promotion materials, and communication campaigns.


• Coordinates and facilitates internal and external programmatic meetings to monitor progress of projects or initiatives as assigned.

This includes developing agendas, facilitating meetings, recording meeting minutes, disseminating meeting minutes and action items as appropriate, and monitoring progress on identified action items and program deliverables.


• Contributes to the design, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of innovative, culturally appropriate, evidence-based programs, content, and services.

Provides technical assistance and expertise in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and applied research.
• Fosters opportunities for bidirectional research between WVUCI and the community.
• Assists with the implementation or recruitment of research projects in the community.
• Documents program progress and submits monthly reports, assessing strengths/weaknesses, and develops and implements strategies to improve outcomes and deliverables.
• Develops and disseminates cancer information creating resources such as handouts, flyers, presentations, internal and external communications, videos, photographs, posters, infographics, social media, websites, etc.

as relevant to both internal and external stakeholders.
• Assists with applications for additional funding opportunities for CPC projects.

Provides data to support development of documentation as required by internal and external stakeholders.
• Participates in the implementation of the mission, vision, and strategic plan for the WVU Cancer Institute and Department of Cancer Prevention and Control.
• Develops and delivers presentations on cancer prevention, cancer screening, health literacy, and cultural competency, and others as determined by need.
• Serves on local and statewide coalitions and taskforces.
• Submits or assists with submission of articles, abstracts, and posters to promote programmatic work, research, and outreach of CPC.
• Functions as a member of the CPC staff and participates in regular team meetings, training sessions, program meetings, and others as required.

Includes conferences and training seminars provided by the WVUCI, Mountains of Hope (MOH) Cancer Coalition, and other relevant entities.


• Completes all required WVU training and certifications.


• Collaborates with other CPC staff and programs to extend the reach of CPC.


• Assists with other CPC program activities as requested by leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline: public health, health communications, social work, social sciences, nursing, health education, healthcare administration, marketing, or other healthcare professions degree.

    Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of combined experience in the following:Coordinating health education programsCommunity event planningGroup dynamics, leadershipProgram assessmentData collection, and project management.
  • An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong time management, organization, and multi-tasking skills.
    • Ability to establish priorities, adhere to deadlines, have high attention to detail and follow through, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
    • Skilled at writing correspondence and preparing reports.
    • Ability to operate the necessary computer, software (Microsoft Office), web-based and other high-tech equipment relative to the program.
    • Skilled in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
    • Ability to work in multidisciplinary team environment and to coordinate participation of team members from various backgrounds.
    • Skilled in group facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution.
    • Ability to manage health education programs, event planning, group dynamics, leadership, program assessment, evaluation, and practice facilitation.
    • Ability to work as part of a team and with a significant degree of independence.
    • Ability to travel frequently with occasional overnight stays, working outside the traditional work week as needed.
    • Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
    • Willingness to seek consultation and supervision as needed.
    • Knowledge of current health issues, health education and behavioral theories, and health information needs of the medically underserved preferred.
    • Ability to interact sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from various cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, including persons of all ages and orientations.
    • Ability to rapidly learn institution, federal, and state statutes and regulations impacting the work.
     

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Experience with community outreach and education, public communication, evaluation, community event planning, program assessment, and research preferred.
