The Role:

Reporter II, News Desk is a senior general-assignment reporter role on TIME’s expanding News Desk.

This journalist plays a critical role in shaping the political and narrative-defining stories and produces in-depth, analytically rich reporting that informs, explains, and influences.

They are well-versed on the demands of breaking news—filing fast, clean copy and exercising sound news judgment.

They bring a robust source network across multiple beats, make/assist with initial prioritization and packaging calls, and consistently deliver a high-volume of high-quality stories per shift.

Responsibilities:

  • Report and write multiple high-impact stories per shift (political reporting, breaking news, investigative pieces, explainers) without sacrificing depth, context, or nuance.
  • Identify and pursue news with the potential to shape major political or societal narratives.
  • Conduct interviews and cultivate relationships with sources across political and policy beats to uncover exclusive storylines.
  • Craft clear, concise, and engaging political and general assignment news.
  • Collaborate with editors, photographers, and videographers to ensure comprehensive coverage.
  • Promote and abide by our commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Qualifications:

  • 4-6 years of experience working in a newsroom working in a reporting capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to pursue and develop agenda-setting stories, with strong editorial judgment and analytical skills.
  • Proven track record of cultivating sources, conducting interviews, and developing exclusive reporting.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, with the ability to consistently file clean, publish-ready copy.

  • Proficiency in social media platforms and content management systems.

Location:

This is a hybrid role.

Eligible candidates for the role must be within a commutable distance of TIME’s New York City or Washington D.C. office upon hire and may be expected to be physically present as needed (typically 3 days/week).
