Job Description
This position is with the Pittsburgh Girls Study - a 22-year longitudinal, community-based study of young women in the City of Pittsburgh.
Several current projects are focused on health during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
The Research Asst Basic Science will be responsible for independently and collaboratively processing, documenting, and storing biospecimen samples as per study protocols.
Creating biospecimen kits for all visits.
This person will be working in a small team and will need to effectively communicate with team members, collaborators, and supervisors.
This position is expected to be able to provide weekday afternoon/evening and Saturday lab coverage as needed.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, self-motivated, and experienced in using a variety of laboratory equipment and methodologies.
They possess strong problem-solving skills, hands-on laboratory experience, and a solid understanding of precision measurement techniques.
Effective communication for documentation and collaboration is essential, along with a thorough knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to respond effectively in emergencies.
Most importantly, they should have a genuine passion for science and a commitment to staying current with emerging research and innovations in the field.
This position is grant funded.
Responsibilities:
+ Prepare, label, store and dispose of reagents, and calibrates equipment for research projects.
+ Assist in obtaining educational resources necessary to perform and interpret research and to remain abreast in research area of function.
+ Maintain laboratory inventory, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies and their proper storage.
+ Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
+ Perform approved research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, storage, and analysis of data, and reporting of results.
+ Maintain a safe clean laboratory-working environment including appropriate equipment maintenance and usage, by conforming to laboratory and hospital policies and standards.
+ Responsible for following the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
+ Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
+ Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology or other basic science.
+ Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
+ Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
+ Interest in biomedical research with lab experience/pipetting experience preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
+ Act 33 with renewal
+ Act 34 with renewal
+ Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
